Microsoft this morning announced a partnership with multiple companies for quantum computing capabilities running in its Azure cloud computing service during its "Ignite" developer conference, with one of the partners being industrial giant Honeywell.

"For those who don't even know Honeywell is in quantum, think of us now as a fully fledged participant and a real contender," said Uttley.
The Microsoft offering is dubbed "Azure Quantum."

When asked if quantum computing requires quantum "supremacy" to be demonstrated, as Google did two weeks ago in Nature magazine, Uttley responded that it's a matter of evolving the science through multiple periods of increasing sophistication.

Although Microsoft has for a long time been developing its own quantum circuitry, the partnership with Honeywell offers the company access to Honeywell's hardware made up of "trapped ions."
The trap in this case is a fabricated device, like a computer chip, that can be used to manipulate those ions, similar to moving electrons through the gates made up of silicon transistors.

A partnership with the startup IonQ announced today will enable developers to use existing Microsoft products — like Visual Studio or the Quantum Development Kit — along with quantum computers.

IonQ uses an approach to quantum computing that focuses on trapping ions.

“IonQ brings a unique approach to quantum computing, with tremendous potential,” Microsoft quantum systems general manager Krysta Svore said in a statement shared with VentureBeat.
“This partnership brings world-class quantum computing capabilities to Azure Quantum, and we’re excited to continue working together to realize the full benefits of quantum computers.”
Companies like Rigetti and D Wave, maker of quantum computers for Google and NASA, also offer quantum computing in the cloud. And IBM’s 53-qubit computer will be available in the cloud.

Earlier this week, Honeywell announced “a breakthrough in quantum computing that accelerates the capability of quantum computers and will enable the company to release the world’s most powerful quantum computer within the next three months.” There’s a lot to unpack here, but the bottom line is this:

Honeywell is making a big claim that is difficult to back up.
But tomorrow is a long way away. Quantum computing is still so new that companies haven’t even settled on the equivalent of classical computing’s transistor. Major players are jostling to lead the space, or at least set the terms for what leadership might look like — including establishing a framework for comparing quantum computers. Because no clear leader has emerged, Honeywell is able to claim that title.

Industrial giant Honeywell on Thursday said it is now live with a quantum computer running client jobs that uses six effective quantum bits, or qubits, and a resulting "volume" of compute that it claims makes the system the most powerful quantum machine currently in production.

The announcement fulfills a vow the company made in March to offer a machine with a quantum volume of 64, as related on March 3rd by ZDNet's Lawrence Dignan in a conversation with Honeywell's head of quantum, Tony Uttley, who is president of the division Honeywell Quantum Solutions.

"In March we said within the next three months we're going to be releasing the world's highest-performing quantum computer, and so this is a case of Honeywell did what it said it was going to do," Uttley told ZDNet in a telephone call.

Chase is working on a paper about the work, which they plan to publish "soon," he said.
Uttley declined to give the names of other customers but said multiple clients are working with the system on applications that fall into three categories: optimization, machine learning, and chemistry and materials science.

"They're basically carving out as little as 1% to 5% of an algorithm and tacking that to the quantum computer to get a very specific result that gets then fed back into a classical machine," he explained.

Honeywell announces its H1 quantum computer with 10 qubits

Honeywell, which was a bit of a surprise entrant into the quantum computing space when it announced its efforts to build the world’s most powerful quantum computer earlier this year, today announced its newest system: the Model H1. The H1 uses trapped-ion technology and features 10 fully connected qubits that allow it to reach a quantum volume of 128 (where quantum volume [QV] is a metric of the overall compute power of a quantum computer, no matter the underlying technology).
That’s higher than comparable efforts by IBM, but also well behind the QV 4,000,000 machine IonQ says it was able to achieve with 32 qubits.

The H1 will be available to enterprises through the Azure Quantum platform and the company says that it is partnering with Zapata Computing and Cambridge Quantum Computing on this project.
