Following on from revealing a new-look icon for its Chromium-based Edge browser, Microsoft has now taken the wraps off more redesigned icons.

Design teams across the company came together as a collective to develop design guidelines that encourage individuality while "creating a cohesive whole," explained Jon Friedman, corporate vice president of design and research at Microsoft. From enterprise to small business to consumer, product teams ensured each icon "represented both the product truth and the larger Microsoft brand."

"With the newest wave of icon redesigns, we faced two major creative challenges. We needed to signal innovation and change while maintaining familiarity for customers. We also had to develop a flexible and open design system to span a range of contexts while still being true to Microsoft," he added.
The newest design guidelines helped Microsoft unify icon construction across the company and within each product family.
The new Windows logo look is very much in line with the recently redesigned icons we've seen for Office, as well as the icon for Chromium-based Edge.

And now, it appears that the company quite close to releasing them to the general public.

According to a Reddit user u/MSFTBear, Microsoft has started to push the redesigned product icons on Windows 10 taskbar. These redesigned icons are based on Microsoft’s Fluent Design System and at present, they now appear only on the taskbar.
Unfortunately, these icons are available only for Windows Insiders that are running the latest Insider Build.

However, it’s not clear whether Microsoft’s modern icons will be available for users running Windows 10 19H2 Update or older. For now, we’ll have to wait for Microsoft to make an official announcement regarding the shipping of these modern icons to know whether they will be available to all Windows 10 users.

Windows 10's colorful app icons are finally showing up for Insiders

For months, dedicated fans have been discovering new icons for the built-in Windows 10 apps, but they actually haven't been available yet. [...] now, they're making their way to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

First spotted by Aggiornamenti Lumia, the apps getting the new icons include Mail and Calendar, Calculator, Groove Music, Movies & TV, Alarms & Clock, and Voice Recorder. Most of these icons had been spotted at some point over the past few months. It's not just the Fast ring that's getting a glimpse of these new icons though. Mail and Calendar are actually getting updated for Insiders in the Release Preview ring, bringing along the respective new icons.

Camera, Weather, Snip & Sketch, Maps, and many others have already been spotted. Now that they've started making their way to the public, though, maybe it won't be long before more apps follow suit.
Microsoft's goal is likely to have these icons ready for the launch of Windows 10X, so they should be available to Insiders at some point before then.

Microsoft’s open-source Fluent icon set is now available for developers on GitHub.

A set of 500 Fluent Design System icons can be used to work across Microsoft products, the web, Android OS, and Apple iOS.
