August 2020 updates for Microsoft Office

Microsoft released the following security and nonsecurity updates for Office in August 2020. These updates are intended to help our customers keep their computers up-to-date. We recommend that you install all updates that apply to you.

Microsoft Office update changes Outlook fallback encryption

Microsoft released the September 2020 non-security Microsoft Office updates with performance improvements and fixes for several issues affecting Windows Installer (MSI) editions of Office 2016 and Office 2013 products.

This month's KB4484511 Office update also changes the default fallback encryption for Microsoft Outlook 2016 from 3DES to AES256.

"The default fallback encryption is chosen if the recipients' certification doesn't have Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) capabilities published to the certificate," Microsoft explains.

Microsoft released the Windows 10 KB4571744 non-security preview cumulative update to address an issue leading to the Windows Update service becoming unresponsive when customers are checking for updates.

The KB4571744 Windows 10 2004 CU also fixes a bug causing the Windows File Explorer to stop working while you browse folders with raw images and other file types.
This update will also address bugs preventing apps from opening or downloading updates in certain scenarios, as well as another one causing Windows apps to take a long time to open.

Microsoft has released quality improvements to the Windows 10 servicing stack, the OS component that enables customers to receive and install Windows updates.

KB4577266, the latest servicing stack update (SSU) also comes with a change in the way future SSUs will be deployed to Windows 10 devices.

"Additionally, this update enables a single-package design that incorporates the servicing stack update (SSU) into the latest cumulative update (LCU)," Microsoft explains.
"Combining the SSU and LCU update into a single package provides a more seamless deployment and installation experience."

Microsoft strongly encourages Windows 10 customers to update their servicing stack to the latest available version before installing the latest KB4571756 and KB4574727 September 2020 cumulative updates (LCU), Monthly Rollup updates, or security updates.

Microsoft has updated its Security Update Guide, which is used by tens of millions of cybersecurity professionals the second Tuesday of every month, also known as Patch Tuesday. The update, according to Microsoft, is meant to deliver a more intuitive user experience.

For its latest update, introduced three weeks ahead of its Oct. 13 Patch Tuesday, Microsoft is boasting an improved user experience and a more modern user interfaces, better filtering and customization options for data views, and improved support for multiple languages.
