September 2020 updates for Microsoft Office

On October 6, 2020 (first Tuesday of the month, Office Patchday) Microsoft released several non-security updates for versions of Microsoft Office that are still supported. Here is a brief overview.

The updates apply to the installable MSI version of Office and are provided through Windows Update. Click-to-run packages receive updates through other channels. For this reason, Office 2019 no longer appears in the following list because only click-to-run installers are available there. Microsoft lists the updates on this page.

As part of this effort, you will see a number of changes and improvements to Windows release notes, the Windows update history pages, and related informational articles. Behind the scenes, we'll also be making foundational changes—to formatting, the user interface, and the type of metadata available.

In addition to making it easier to locate relevant support articles when using a search engine, the consolidation of these two information experiences increases our ability to quickly publish new articles and keep existing articles up to date.

Our current URL structure is: http://support.microsoft.com/[locale]/help/[kb-id]/[url-title]. To find an article by KB ID, you simply append the KB ID to the root URL, https://support.microsoft.com/help. At times, however, KB IDs are not listed in the article itself, and can only be found within the KB URL. The tie between the KB ID is not as strongly associated with the article by search engines and articles can be more difficult to find.

For greater consistency and to support improved search indexing, the URL structure moving forward will include both the GUID and the KB ID. Since many are familiar with appending the KB ID to the URL, we will continue to support this approach and use automatic redirects to ensure you land on the appropriate article.

Microsoft has released the October 2020 Office security updates with a total of 24 security updates and 5 cumulative updates for 7 different products, fixing 13 vulnerabilities that could enable remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable systems.

The highlight of this month's Microsoft Office security updates is without a doubt CVE-2020-16947, a remote code execution vulnerability that leads to remote code execution when previewing or opening maliciously crafted emails with a vulnerable Microsoft Outlook version.
Exploitation can also be achieved in a web-based attack scenario via sites used to host specially crafted files designed to exploit CVE-2020-16947.

The October 2020 Patch Tuesday Office security updates address remote code execution (RCE), security bypass, elevation of privilege, denial of service, information disclosure, and cross-site scripting vulnerabilities on Windows systems running vulnerable Microsoft Installer (.msi) and Click to Run editions of Microsoft Office products.
Microsoft rated the 11 RCE security flaws patched this month Critical or Important severity issues seeing that they could enable attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user after successful exploitation.
