Microsoft has released a fresh update for its set of Windows tools called PowerToys. Version 0.62 is now available for download with three brand-new utilities: Screen Ruler for measuring pixels between objects on the screen; Quick Accent for typing letters with accents; and Text Extractor for copying text from images.

PowerToys 0.62.1 released to fix Keyboard Manager and a few other bugs

#20430, #20450 and #20532 - Added more resilient exit code for background C# processes which were causing crashes being reported when upgrading PowerToys or the .NET runtimes.

PowerToys will soon show what processes prevent you from deleting files

Future Microsoft PowerToys update will add a new "toy" to the already impressive set of various utilities Windows 10 and 11 users can enjoy for free. Microsoft is currently working on implementing the "File Locksmith" tool aimed at helping Windows customers figure out why they cannot delete a specific file or folder.

File Locksmith will add a new context menu entry (currently named "What's using this file?") responsible for showing what processes "hold" a file or directory, thus preventing it from being deleted or renamed.

PowerToys 0.63 is out with a much smaller installation footprint

Microsoft has released a fresh update for its set of Windows tools called PowerToys. Version 0.63 is now available for download with a new setting in Quick Accent to pick a language. The overall installed size for PowerToys on disk is also reduced from 817 MB to 587 MB, this is also reflected in a much smaller 83 MB setup file compared to 0.62's 125 MB. Plus you will find a bunch of fixes in this release.

Highlights

QuickAccent contains a new setting to select a language. This should reduce the number of accented characters a user needs to pick from. Thanks @damienleroy!

Reduced installer (125 MB in 0.62.1 compared to 83 MB in 0.63.0) and installed (817 MB in 0.62.1 compared to 587 MB in 0.63.0) sizes by sharing the Windows App SDK, VC++ redistributable and PowerToys Interop runtime files between utilities. This is a step towards removing the UAC requirement on install. The next step is shipping .NET self-contained and shared between utilities.

PowerToys to get settings backup and hosts editor tool

Settings backup in PowerToys will let users export all customizations to a dedicated file and restore settings from another. Microsoft also wants to add extra features, such as automatic backups and restorations. The new backup options will sit on the general tab alongside the option to specify where PowerToys should store its backups.

Besides the ability to backup PowerToys settings, the app will soon receive a new "toy" for editing the hosts file. Current Windows versions have no built-in tools for working with hosts, so a dedicated utility will make it much more convenient.
PowerToys's hosts editor will allow users to work with the file using a convenient UI instead of the good-old Notepad. The tool can add new entries and reposition, filter, disable, and ping existing addresses. Also, you will be able to add comments to each entry for extra convenience.

Microsoft has released PowerToys v0.65.0, but compared to the previous version, the latest one does not offer any new utilities. However, PowerToys v0.65 does come with a few noteworthy new features, tons of bug fixes, and improvements.

Microsoft has highlighted three new features, including custom formats support in ColorPicker, and a new description of the selected character in Quick Accent. The company also highlights that the codebase in the latest version of PowerToys is now upgraded to work with .Net 7.

Besides these changes, it also includes some known issues, which you must be careful about. You may encounter issues with the Text Extractor utility, Settings window, PowerRename, and the image resizer. To learn more about the known issues, you check out the complete official changelog below.

It is update time for those using PowerToys on Windows 10 and 11. Version 0.66.0 is now available for download with numerous fixes, improvements, and minor changes. This release includes self-contained .NET 7, meaning it is no longer required to install it standalone before PowerToys works. If you were waiting for the fancy Quick Access launcher, then you'll have to wait for a future release, as it hasn't been added yet. But fortunately, there are no known issues with in release.

Microsoft PowerToys' upcoming Mouse Jump / FancyMouse could be super-helpful on Windows

Microsoft PowerToys could soon gain a pretty cool and helpful feature in the very near future. That's because a new mouse utility dubbed "FancyMouse" is currently being integrated into PowerToys, with the project still a work in progress (WIP). At the moment, the feature is called "Mouse Jump" though the official name of the utility in the final release could be different. The developer, Michael Clayton, says the feature is "functional and ready for an initial design review but will probably need some work before it's ready to release."

As mentioned before, the new Mouse Jump utility will be based on FancyMouse, a software that basically helps move the mouse rapidly across the screen. This is especially useful for people working on very large ultrawide (21:9) or super-ultrawide (32:9) monitors with more real estate. Likewise, it will also prove very handy for those on multiple monitor setups. While a high DPI (dots per inch) mouse is somewhat helpful in this regard, FancyMouse wants to make the task even easier.

It is update time for those using PowerToys on Windows 10 and 11. Version 0.67.0 is now available for download with numerous fixes, improvements, and minor changes. The highlight of this release is the availability of the Quick access system tray launcher, which you can see in action below.

There's also a good number of fixes included in this release, and perhaps importantly, PowerToys registry settings have been moved from the general machine scope (HKLM) to user scope (HKCU).

If you are unfamiliar with PowerToys, it is a set of advanced utilities provided by Microsoft and the open-source developer community. It contains various tools, such as an app launcher, bulk file renamer, color picker, a utility to customize shortcuts, etc. Microsoft frequently updates PowerToys with new features and fixes.

Microsoft releases PowerToys v0.72.0 with new plugins and a massively reduced footprint

Although there are no brand-new modules to explore, PowerToys Run has new plugins to work with. There are also a huge number of bug fixes and improvements across pretty much all areas of the utility, and a great new feature for Mouse Highlighter. On top of this, Microsoft has managed to dramatically slash the installation footprint of the PowerToys collections.
