Microsoft today announced its earnings for Q4 FY2021, beating analysts’ estimates and making $46.2 billion in revenue, a 21% increase over the same period last year. The growth was backed by strong performers across the company’s cloud and productivity-focused offerings. For the whole of FY2021, the company made $168.1 billion in revenue, which was up 18% year over year. As usual, CEO Satya Nadella held an earnings webcast to narrate the highlights and provide more insights into the figures, which was recapped by Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Communications, Frank Shaw on Twitter.

As part of that webcast, Satya Nadella announced that its Teams collaboration platform now has close to 250 million monthly active users (MAU). The last time that the firm provided a number for the service was during the last earnings call, where it detailed the daily active user count, which stood at 145 million.
In addition to the quarter of a billion figure, Shaw said that there are close to 80 million active Teams phones users, with calls “surpassing 1 billion” in a single month.

Microsoft is working on adding a spam call notification feature to the Microsoft 365 Teams collaboration platform.

Once the new feature rolls out, Microsoft Teams will alert Office 365 users when they're receiving what looks like spam calls.

Back in June, Microsoft unveiled some important updates coming to Teams, including the ability to reply to specific chat messages. Today, the company has announced that the quoted reply feature is now available in public preview on the Microsoft Teams desktop apps, and it's coming soon to the Teams web app.

The quoted reply experience has been available in the Teams mobile app for quite some time, and it’s finally available in 1:1, group, or meeting chats for desktop users.

“Quoted reply allows you to select messages in chat that you want to include in your response. It is a great way to add context and clarity with who you are conversing with whether it is a recent message or from one earlier in the conversation,” the company explained in a blog post.

The ability to reply to specific messages is one of the top-requested features from users and it should help to improve asynchronous collaboration between meetings. However, quoted replies are currently restricted to chat messages, and channel conversations and external messages are not supported yet.

Another day, another controversy. This time, it's a result of Slack filing a complaint against Microsoft's Teams and Office activities. Specifically, Slack Technologies made the claim that Microsoft integrating Teams with Office constituted an illegal move that disadvantaged products attempting to rival Teams (via Reuters).

Slack is one of Teams' rivals, as are Zoom and Facebook. In response to Slack's complaint, EU antitrust regulators are contacting said rivals to ask them specifics such as how many of their customers had left for Teams or Office, how much money those migrations cost them, and the overall impact of these elements in concert.

I totally agree with Slack, it's the same as with IE vs Netscape, M$ should stop with these unfair business practices. Bundling MS Teams and MS Defender with the Windows OS is perhaps handy for users, but not fair to other companies.

Back in June, we learned that Microsoft has begun testing support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in its online collaboration app, Teams. Although chat data is encrypted both in rest and transit, meetings were not encrypted end-to-end. Today, Microsoft has announced that a public preview of E2EE in Teams calls is now available for organizations to utilize.

If a call is end-to-end encrypted, a shield with a lock icon will appear in the Teams window. A 20-digit security code will be also be shown and both parties can verify that the same code is visible to them. Once a call has E2EE enabled, no other party, including Microsoft, will have access to the decrypted content.

Depending upon customer feedback, Microsoft will explore if E2EE can be rolled out for group calls at a later, unspecified date. Groups calls and chat currently utilize a pattern called "Microsoft encryption".

Microsoft had a bunch of developer- and enterprise-focused announcements at its Ignite 2021 conference. Among those were also some details related to enhancements coming to Microsoft Teams.

First of all, Microsoft Records Management now offers better integration with Teams. This enables configuration of adaptive policy scopes for groups within Teams, as well as separate retention policies for attached files stored on SharePoint of OneDrive with messages. Both of these capabilities are in preview right now. However, retention policies for private channels in the collaboration app are generally available as of now.

To support customer security and compliance requirements, IT will have full control of who can use E2EE in the organization. A new policy will be added and it will have a parameter to enable E2EE for 1-1 calls. By default it is disabled, allowing admins to have full control of the roll-out of this feature in their organization. E2EE can be enabled for the whole organization or just a subset of users.

Today Microsoft announced the new rollout schedule will begin in early December (previously early November) and expect the rollout to be completed by late December (previously late November).

Microsoft today announced the launch of Microsoft Teams Essentials, a new standalone offering based on Teams designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Like many of Microsoft’s products and efforts lately, this service came as a result of the changes that happened in the world in the past year and a half.

Microsoft Teams Essentials includes all the features small businesses need to communicate within the organization. This includes the ability to hold meetings that last up to 30 hours, and meetings can hold up to 300 people at once. This is lower than what standard Teams offers (up to 1,000 users), but it makes perfect sense for smaller businesses. It also includes features you’d already expect from Teams, including calendar integration for Outlook and Google Calendar, group chat templates to make it easy to start a new project, and so on.

Officially, Teams for personal use supports meetings with up to 100 people for 60 minutes, or 1:1 meetings up to 24 hours. However, those limits are currently waived so you can have up to 300 people and meetings up to 30 hours as a result of the pandemic.

Tip: Thinking About Teams Essentials? Don’t!

Microsoft announced Teams Essentials yesterday, and it seems like a great deal at just $4 per month per user. But the firm offers an even better deal. And it makes Teams Essentials, well, non-essential.

No, I’m not talking about the free version of Microsoft Teams, though that is also an option. Microsoft Teams (free), as Microsoft calls it, could meet many users’ needs. It supports unlimited group meetings for up to 60 minutes with up to 100 participants per meeting, 5 GB of cloud storage per user, unlimited chat with coworkers and customers; file sharing, tasks, and polling; and data encryption for meetings, chats, calls, and files.

Teams Essentials improves on Microsoft Teams (free) in several ways. It offers unlimited group meetings for up to 30 hours with up to 300 participants per meeting, 10 GB of cloud storage per user, and “anytime” phone and web support.” For those extras, you’ll pay $4 per user per month (with an annual subscription, so it’s really $48 per user per year).

That sounds reasonable. But if you’re going to pay, Microsoft offers an even better deal: Microsoft 365 Business Basic, which costs $5 per user per month (again with an annual subscription, so it’s really $60 per user per year). And the advantages of Microsoft 365 Business Basic over Microsoft Teams Essentials are significant.

How significant? You get everything in Microsoft Teams Essentials, plus, Team meetings recordings with transcripts, Teams breakout rooms, Outlook calendar integration in Teams, web and mobile versions of Office apps, 1 TB of cloud storage per user (vs. just 10 GB), business-class email, single sign-on to Microsoft 365 apps and services, enforced multi-factor authentication, advanced auditing and reporting, and various administration and support features with a 99.99 percent uptime guarantee. For the storage alone, it’s worth the additional $1 per month. It’s no contest.

After that, things get expensive. Microsoft 365 Business Standard, for example, is the next tier up, and it costs $12.50 per user per month (really, $150 per user per year). That gets you the desktop Office apps, of course, plus Teams webinar support and other niceties. But we’re talking basic value here. And from my perspective, Microsoft 365 Business Basic is a much better value than Microsoft Teams Essentials.

Despite EU complaint, Slack says they do not face serious competition from Microsoft

In 2020 Slack, which now belongs to SalesForce, complained to the EU about Microsoft bundling Teams with Microsoft 365, and a year later, in 2021, the competition regulator started a preliminary investigation into the issue.

It, therefore, comes as somewhat of a surprise that Slack feels it does not face serious competition from Microsoft.

Microsoft Teams now needs 50% less power during meetings

Microsoft has drastically reduced Microsoft Teams' power requirements in calls and meetings since June 2020, improving experience consistency and making it more friendly with low-end devices.

Robert Aichner, a Principal Group Program Manager at Microsoft, said today that Microsoft Teams now uses up to 50% less power during energy-intensive scenarios like meetings between more than 10 participants where all of them have video toggled on.

These improvements are the result of isolating and optimizing energy-intensive processes such as content capture, encoding, and rendering.

"During our evaluation of the video capture process, we focused on camera optimization to reduce demands on the CPU when using video in meetings, improving configurations, reducing code complexity for auto-exposure, auto-white balance, auto-aliasing, resulting in power draw reduction from the onboard camera and stability enhancements, and face detection processes," Aichner explained.

Microsoft Teams gets new breakout room features to boost meeting efficiency

Microsoft has announced a new update for Teams that helps simplify the management and creation of breakout rooms to boost overall efficiency. Some of the new features include being able to reassign participants to ensure the correct people are in breakout rooms when needed, and assignment persistence which ensures the same people are included in subsequent sessions.

With this update, organisers can reassign participants even while a room is ongoing to make sure that the correct people are in the breakout room. This will help to save time as meetings won’t have to be restarted. With persistent assignments, organisers can save time by choosing who participates in what, just once.

Tutanota cries antitrust foul over Microsoft Teams blocking sign-ups for its email users

Microsoft is being called out for blocking users of the end-to-end encrypted email service, Tutanota, from registering an account with its cloud-based collaboration platform, Teams, if they try to do that using a Tutanota email address.

The problem, which has been going on unrectified for some time — with an initial complaint raised with Microsoft support back in January 2021 — appears to have arisen because it treats Tutanota as a corporate email, rather than what it actually is (and has always been), an email service.

In a blog post detailing the saga, Tutanota co-founder, Matthias Pfau, dubs Microsoft’s behavior a “severe anti-competitive practice”.

“This is just one example of how Microsoft can and does abuse its dominant market position to harm competitors, which in turn also harms consumers,” he adds.

Tutanota kept on trying to press for a reason why Microsoft could not reclassify the domain for weeks — but just hit the same brick wall denial. Hence it’s going public with its complaint now.

“The conversation went back and forth for at lest six weeks until we finally gave up — due to the repeated response that they would not change this,” the spokeswoman added.

The video clip feature is coming to Teams sooner than we think

At Inspire 2022, Microsoft announced a new feature of «Video clip» for Teams along with Excel Live and Viva Engage. However, it didn’t bother to let us know when users would be able to use it. But now, thanks to the Microsoft 365 roadmap page, we at least know what month Microsoft is aiming to bring short video capability to Teams.
Teams will have short videos in September
Based on the details provided on the roadmap page, Microsoft will include the ability to create and watch short video messages in Teams next month. It has also clarified that Teams users on all platforms, including Windows, Web, Android, Mac, and iOS, will be able to benefit from Video clip.

For those of you who don’t know, video clips in Teams are meant to let us create video messages to add more meaning to our conversations. It’s unclear at this time how short the videos will be, but they shouldn’t be longer than a minute or two. Once the video is recorded, you can also review it before sending it to the other person.

Microsoft replacing Teams Rooms Premium with cheaper 'Pro' and offering 'Basic' for free

Microsoft is revising the naming and pricing structure for Teams Rooms subscriptions. From 1st September 2022, the Premium version of Teams Rooms is set to be replaced by Pro, and it will be cheaper than current subscriptions.

Teams Rooms is a special version of the audio-video conferencing and online collaboration platform. It is meant for customers who own special hardware for virtual conferencing. Dedicated microphones, soundbars, desk phones that have screens and cameras, and other components are part of the package.

Microsoft has been charging customers to access and use these virtual conference rooms. And this cost is over and above Teams licenses. Teams Rooms currently cost $50 a month for a Premium license or $15 a month for Standard service.
Moving ahead, the Premium version of Teams Rooms is being replaced by a Pro version.

The Pro and Basic subscription tiers of Microsoft Teams Rooms will be officially announced to the public on September 6. However, both will be functional and can be sold by partners from September 1. Microsoft currently offers free trials of Teams Rooms Pro.
