Last Thursday, Amazon AWS and Slack announced a major partnership to take on Microsoft Teams. Both the companies revealed several new integrations like Amazon Chime infrastructure with Slack Calls, AWS Key Management Service with Slack Enterprise Key Management (EKM), AWS Chatbot integration with Slack and Amazon AppFlow integration with Slack. Slack also revealed that Amazon will be deploying Slack for its employees internally.

I think Amazon and Slack partnership is a great idea to take on Microsoft Teams in the productivity space.

Video filters
If you like using video filters in photography and social media apps, Microsoft is now bringing the same capability to Teams. First of all, Microsoft is raising the maximum number of Teams meetings participants from 300 people to up to 1,000. While the company didn’t share an ETA for the change today, it also revealed that it’s working on allowing Teams meetings with up to 20,000 participants, which should be great for companies holding large digital events.

Next, Microsoft Teams will soon allow meeting participants to use emojis to share how they feel about the event.

Microsoft Teams meetings will also soon get support for chat bubbles, which will make chat messages appear on the screen for chat participants while they’re in a meeting.
In addition to these new Chat bubbles, Microsoft will also working on speaker attribution for live captions during Teams meetings, making it easy for participants to see who is speaking.

When signed into Microsoft Teams for personal life, chats are more like standard messaging rather than the channel structure seen in the professional-oriented version of Teams.

Microsoft has an FAQ section that breaks down Teams for personal life. In response to the question "Do I need a Microsoft 365 subscription to use the new features in Teams?" the page states "At this time, a Microsoft 365 subscription isn't required to use the new features in Teams" (emphasis added). Microsoft's phrasing implies that in the future these features could require a paid subscription.

Microsoft has been announcing plenty of new features for Teams, and today, the company went over some of the enhancements specifically for the education segment. Some of the features detailed have already been announced, but others are more specific for schools and they're being announced for the first time.

First off, features such as Together Mode, Dynamic View, a 7x7 grid for video meetings on desktop, and a 3x3 grid for mobile devices will be rolling out in August so more meeting participants can be viewed at the same time. As reported by ZDNet today, Microsoft has now edited its previous blog post to remove any mentions of the Dataflex brand, which had already been registered by a company named Data Access Corporation.

“Data Access Corporation has multiple, registered U.S. trademarks for our “DATAFLEX” brand software based on the first use in commerce in 1981. Accordingly, we were totally surprised by Microsoft’s use of our trademark for their new platform to easily build and deploy apps that they call “Microsoft Dataflex,” wrote Data Access Worldwide CEO Chip Casanave on July 21, adding that his company was “consulting legal experts for advice.”
Yesterday, Microsoft quietly updated that same blog post previously mentioning Dataflex to note that “A name will be selected which we will share in the coming weeks.”

Microsoft Teams is being updated on iOS that bring a few new features. The iPadOS app now supports a 3x3 grid view in meetings. Additionally, an option to toggle a setting that reduces the amount of data consumed in video calls is being added to iOS. The Android app also adds a few new features such as the ability to send meeting invite links to users that do not have a Teams account.

The Teams release notes page on Microsoft Support also mentions that Cortana voice support has been added to the app starting August 18. However, the changelog does not mention the addition. Cortana in Teams is currently rolling out only for users in the U.S., with a wider rollout expected in the future.

The Android version of the app was also updated today, however, the changelog seems to be the same from earlier versions, suggesting that it could be a bug-fixing update.
