Sounds like MSE's program update is as lame as their definitions up date............At least they're consistent. :cautious:

I think that they will eventually, I believe the term MS use for this is 'staging'. ;)

Edit: I just got it on my Win 7 64 bit desktop on Windows Update, my Vista notebook hasn't yet.

    Guys,

I have an older Dell Computer from 2005 running a Pentium D processor at 3GHz with 3 Gig of Ram...I have heard that MSE slows down older computers with Windows XP.

Should I look elsewhere for a Free Antivirus?

    Thanks

Yes, and not just because of resources usage. There are better alternatives.

Perhaps a bit better detection, but unfortunately just about all of the other alternatives are infested with some sort of idiotic toolbar or plugin or whatnot that makes most of them less than desirable. MSE is clean in that regard. And it's just about the only free one left that is. Paid is another story though...

You are not going to know for sure until you try MSE on your system and see what happens. An alternative would be Avast free, which I would rather have anyway.

    Exactly.
What makes MSE different is that it's clean and has almost no false positives.

I agree with you & Kerodo. I now have 2.1 on my notebook. It seems to be working fine. My notebook hasn't got a lot of power (Intel Core 2 Duo, 1Gb RAM, 1.6 Ghz), MSE runs well on it, as long as I watch the RAM spiking after an update or a scan I don't get any freezes. It's also nice not to worry about false-positives so much. We can all have a good whinge at Microsoft (& I certainly do) but MSE does what it says on the box. I run it on both my computers. It's the dog's bollocks as we say in England!

Those toolbars and plugins are (virtually) all optional, and could only fool idiotic humans.

Your computer might be old-er but it doesn't qualify as old & slow....IMHO MSE wont slow that PC down a bit. Give it a try and see.

If you want MSE to check updates more frequently just create a scheduled task. Just do a google search and you will find the solution.

I just drove in i believe a moonsoon of a thunderstorm, coming home from a client, I could not see 1ft in front of me- but we do need the rain so i cannot really complain but you know the rain goddess should have at least waited till i at least got home before the skies opened up!
    oh well such is life
    Have a good weekend everyone

That's a relief, I still haven't quite got over the fact that Opera users aren't cleverer than IE users! LOL

Anyway, I've been using MSE for exactly one year today. It was this day last year that a routine McAfee DAT & an MS update 'fried' Google Chrome on my notebook. I managed to reinstall Chrome but I decided enough was enough. I tried the freeware Panda Cloud AV first after uninstalling McBloaty & running the uninstaller a couple of times just to make sure. Unfortunately Panda was false-positiveville (although incredibly light), so I was down to deciding on MSE, avast! or AVG free (maybe Avira).

What can I say after a year? It's still light on my notebook, my newer desktop PC has only ever run MSE (64 bit) & AFAIK I'm virus/trojan/malware free.

I still give MSE the big :thumb:

MSE is light and doesn't throw around FP's. It's also designed by Microsoft and because Windows is closed source it makes sense that they would be the only ones with the insight to protect it.

I flip flop back and forth between MSE and Avast. I think both are good. But for some reason, I can't quite make up my mind to stick with one or the other yet....

It's nice to have good (freeware) choices. ;)
