Yeah it's been mentioned, and I'm a believer, because I haven't had an automatic update yet. :( I've had to download them manually. I know people say you don't have to have WU set to automatic to get the updates, but I'm beginning to think that is false. On my system anyway. :(

I've turned on the automatic updates from the security center, see what happens, thanks.

I had to uninstall PC Tools firewall. Is this typical?

I have yet to test XP, but Vista is working fine auto-updating, it's just hidden in the background, and no, it wasn't at my scheduled windows update check.

I see the issue now. Actually, I have Win Updates set to automatic also, perhaps that's why I'm getting auto updates on MSE. I can see the updates logged in the Win Updates history every day. So it looks like the 2 are tied together.

My update history shows at least 3 updates a day for MSE. On the 22nd I uninstalled the leaked version and installed the offfical beta. You can see this illustrated in the update log (from "Morro" to "MSE"):

I've now found out i'll never use this thing because of utterly idiotic update system. I mean why the hell they have to pack updates inside Windows Update.
It's stupid and doesn't even work right. It'll simply be either avast! or AVIRA.
And i was hoping to use it on my netbook because of its simplicity and decent detection. Lame.

The update issue is a problem IMO. For auto updates on XP (which is all I'm testing it on) you must be an admin and you must have Windows Updates set to automatic. Both not the best ideas...

The update issue (on XP at least) is reported as a bug on Microsoft forum.

Some people don't want updates to be on automatic, they prefer manual, where they can look and see what's going on and pick and choose before applying them. So having to set Win Updates to auto is an issue for some. I am thinking it's a pretty silly idea to do it this way too, although I don't mind having Win Updates on automatic.

Guys and girls, in one of the systems (and only one, so far) that I've installed MSE, with real-time protection, I have it set to notify me for new updates. It hasn't changed my settings.

(It's something I've said in a previous post.)

Why would it change yours? (This system is Windows Vista SP1.)

Yes, the updates history appears in Windows Update, but that's all. Who cares if it appears there, as long as it updates, and it doesn't change my settings.

    The automatic update requirement is a big problem for those of us who want only those updates that are applicable and necessary for (our) particular install configuration;

    -example-
I do not want SP 3 because it includes updates I have no need for.
I never download updates or hotfixes relevent to/for Outlook Express and Windows Messenger as both are permanently disabled on all of my XP installs.
(I don't use Vista, although I own a license for Ultimate, and I'm really not, as of now, interested in Windows 7).
I have also disabled remote desktop as well as a few other services that I will never use.
Why would anyone want to download and install updates and hotfixes for services they don't use and are, in fact, disabled ?

Microsofts' decision regarding MSE updates is definitely flawed; hopefully, they will change it.

Would be good if they did, but I'm sure their opinion is that everyone needs every update they push thru. I'd like to see the program do the updates on it's own myself....

Chill man, it's still beta. Personally I like the fact they are tied into WU because it makes sure the user is not only updated with Defs but also patches, increasing security and minimizing infection. Although I do agree, it does somewhat need tweaked, so we can like, choose when it updates at least.

Running ESS with the AV disabled, FW enabled, no compatibility issues.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care if the updates come from the Windows Update console. As for unwanted updates that may be downloaded automatically, they can always be uninstalled later.

MSE is running well on my computer, and considering that all modules are active it is even lighter than my usual AV. I can't wait to see its detection capabilities thoroughly tested, although seen the results of the last AV Comparatives for OneCare, it must be good already.

I tried it and was having issues with downloads using Firefox. There would be a long delay or lock up before the download started.

I think I will stick with an AV independent of the OS anyway.

I had WU set to automatic all day today, and no definitions installed automatically. I know it updates during the weekend because I just downloaded today's definitions. Maybe it doesn't like XP. Maybe it doesn't like my XP. :doubt: Looks like I will be uninstalling MSE. :(

It updates automatically on Vista Home (sp2) but Win XP pro (sp3) is another story. There is a bug that Microsoft will patch for Win XP. I use the fix that is on Microsofts site using the job scheduler and the MPcmdrun.exe -updatesignatures. Put this is a .bat file and have the job scheduler kick it off every few hours to get updates. I think that was the .exe. I'm not on my laptop to check. I like this program better than the rest of the other free AV's. Maybe it's the simplicity of it, I don't know. o_O

Same here: WU automatic, but no updates. When I tried (5 minutes ago) to update manually, it did, but I also got an alert of failure (although I checked WU and it updated successfully).

I don't know what to make of all this, I live in Seoul, maybe it has something to do with the location.
