I felt compelled to install it! :D I've seen people, here and other places, mentioning that is very stable.

I also believe that Microsoft wouldn't make the mistake of releasing a public beta, having the possibility for it (MSE) cause serious problems to users, who probably want it to test right away. I believe Microsoft put a lot of work to release a very stable beta version.

    I'll see what happens, I guess. ;)

    No problem my friend.

I uninstalled MSE and now I am running DriveSentry, Filseclab personal firewall and superantispyware professional. Let me see how it goes.

    Thanks,
    Balaji.

Well, I uninstalled it. It made Sandboxie not load. I'm guessing this is not a problem with MSE, but rather with Sandboxie.

This very same problem happened with AVG Identity Protection, when I tested it. I remember that, back then, I had NOD 32 v4. If I uninstalled NOD, then Sandboxie would load. Reinstalling it, would make Sandboxie not load. But, then, disabling AVG IDP's services, would make Sandboxie load.

I know... Sounds odd. I really believe is an issue with Sandboxie itself.

Or, I don't know if anyone could say whether or not is possible that Windows system has a limitation to how many services can be installed (running, manual, disabled)?

I ask this, because, I also remember I tested the very applications in a virtual machine, and all (NOD 32, Sandboxie and AVG IDP) worked just fine.

Would it be, actually, possible for Windows have that sort of limitation?

You might want to consider using revo uninstaller to completely remove Sandboxie, install MSE, then install Sandboxie again.

Although I don't use Sandboxie anymore (I hate the fact the developer is so arrogant about 64 bit) I do have 1 system that still has it, so I tested it with MSE and it seemed to work fine, Vista SP2 also.

Yes. I had SBIE running with MSE on a Win XP pro (sp3) pc and Vista Home (sp1) pc without any major problems except on the Win Xp Pro pc the darn thing wouldn't automatically update. However, I just switched to GeSWall in place of SBIE for no apparent reason. :D

Then, I can only assume that Windows has a limitation on how many services it can installed. It has got to be it. I can't think of any other logical reason.

My guess is that if I install Sandboxie in a virtual machine with MSE, it will work just fine.

I'll check it out... 'cos I must confess I really like MSE, and for a while I had it with real-time protection ON, and it was very light. It would be great to have it in my family's computers.

Cnet First look video of public beta for Microsoft Security Essentials

The video does not go into much detail but does acknowledge some short comings of the current beta.

I wanted to test their response rate to brand new file submission, needless to say I was gobsmacked at the response time.

I got not 1, not 2, but 3 emails with status updates on the file, wonderful! I got the first email within 30 minutes of submitting the file, confirming they received it, the 2nd, 40 minutes after that, and the 3rd 10 minutes after that confirming detection has been added. Total time to add new files, no more than 1.5 hours.

I'm no "special prioritized client" or anything like that, just a random file submission to their website.

I was going to do that, but I thought to first check what sort of services were running. I had a-squared and lavasoft ad-aware services there, set to manual. I actually wasn't using them. a-squared I wondered how it would be, and I installed it sometime ago, but then forgot I even had it. Lavasoft, I've been testing the beta versions. Also forgot I had it. :D

Anyway... I uninstalled those two, and then reinstalled MSE. Rebooted my machine, started Sandboxie and it loaded.

So, Windows does have a limitation regarding how many services it can have installed, whether they're set to automatically run, disabled or set to manual.

I just wonder why Sandboxie, specifically, and not any other.

How often does it auto-update? Would people recommend it as my AV?

I would need to see more test results first, I've got quite a few I will be conducting myself also. It does auto update but the timer is hidden, I believe someone said 3 hours? Not sure, but it also checks for updates when your Windows Update is scheduled.

This really isn't a recommendation thread for anti-malware products. It is a discussion of a beta anti-malware product.

I tried it wil Prevx Edge and GESwall and it spiked a LOT. I temporarily shut down Prevx and CPU usage returned to a very low state. For me, it ran smooth and light after that. Not a bad beta.

True, but the fitness of use as an AV is part of that, IMO. It doesn't seem off topic to me to ask if it seems good enough to replace one of the more known AVs.

Some people posted they didn't get the download for MSE in time before Microsoft ended it. However, Softpedia lists MSE Beta version 1.0.1407.00 as available for download. Thats the same build number as the official Microsoft release. So, anyone should be able to get it still. Am I missing something?

As a matter of fact, I could download it from Softpedia 30 minutes ago,(I'm not in the US nor China), and after seeing Matt's video I think this could be a winner. My system reacted well to it, the only noticeable difference with my usual AV is the committed memory, slightly more, but the speed hasn't been affected using all modules.

    Does it have any heuristics?

I think its heuristics is more of an 'in the cloud analyses' possibly using MS SpyNet. You can see it in action watching Matt's video, see elapsed's link post # 313.

I don't know whether this has been mentioned, updates can only be started manually, no automatic updates?
