Microsoft previews the future of Office documents with Fluid Framework for the web

Microsoft first unveiled its Fluid Framework earlier this year as the future of web collaboration and shared or interactive services. The company is now launching a preview of this work today and offering some more information about exactly what Fluid Framework is.

“We do believe we have to do really core technological innovation in key areas,” explains Jared Spataro, head of Microsoft 365, in an interview with The Verge. “Fluid is a way for us to innovate in collaboration, but also in the future of a document in content creation.” This new document model allows authors to tear apart content and use it across apps and flexible documents.
Developers will get an early preview of this Fluid Framework to build apps and services that utilize it, and Microsoft is also opening up a public preview of Fluid to show off the end user experience.

It will really be down to developers to show off what is possible with Microsoft’s Fluid Framework, but the company is confident it has “industry leading speed and scale” for this new technology to really reshape the web.

MicrosoftMicrosoft is creating a new kind of Office document. Instead of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, the company has created Lego blocks of Office content that live on the web. The tables, graphs, and lists that you typically find in Office documents are transforming into living, collaborative modules that exist outside of traditional documents.

Microsoft calls its Lego blocks Fluid components, and they can be edited in real time by anyone in any app. The idea is that you could create things like a table without having to switch to multiple apps to get it done, and the table will persist on the web like a Lego block, free for anyone to use and edit.

“Imagine you could take those Lego pieces and put them in any place you wanted: in emails, in chats, in other apps,” explains Jared Spataro, head of Microsoft 365, in an interview with The Verge. “As people work on them, they will always be updated and contain the latest information.”
Microsoft’s Fluid Framework sounds a lot like Google Docs, but it’s actually Google Docs on steroids. Microsoft is so confident it has built the future of productivity, it’s now open-sourcing its Fluid Framework so the rest of the world can help shape what it has created.

Fluid components will show up with a special outline indicating they’re alive in Outlook on the web. And much like existing Office collaborative tools, you’ll see the avatars of people who are currently editing a Fluid component live and in real time within the email it’s embedded into.
The Fluid rollout will be gradual, starting initially with Office.com and Outlook on the web, before appearing in Microsoft Teams later this year and even desktop versions of Outlook next year.

The basic concepts of Fluid have been used by many in preview over more than six months, and Microsoft says it has seen a big demand from third-party developers.
Microsoft is now planning to document Fluid framework and make it open source in the coming weeks, so many more can contribute to it.

Microsoft has published the code for its Fluid Framework on Github - the framework is a Typescript library for real-time collaborative web applications.
Fluid Framework has been in the works for some time. It was previewed at Build in May 2019, then shown in more detail at Build 2020 earlier this year. Microsoft said at the time it would be open source within a month, but it has taken four.

Microsoft is using the framework in its 365 service for collaborative documents that perform and scale better than traditional Office shared authoring. Microsoft 365 has its own Fluid server and a .fluid document type. Unlike other Office documents, it is purely cloud based.
“Fluid Framework works with your application framework of choice,” the docs stated, “whether you prefer straight JavaScript or a framework like React, Angular or Vue.”

Although the code is now published, it is still in preview. Microsoft reckons that the “core technology powering Fluid Framework is mature and stable. However the layers built on top of that foundation are still a work in progress.”

Fluid is interesting but its real-world value to Microsoft remains unclear. Microsoft designed it with real-time collaborative document editing in mind, but the restrictions around incompatibility with existing Office documents and inability to work offline will be issues as it tries to integrate this into Microsoft 365.
Compelling use cases may yet emerge, and the framework does have potential for developers building collaborative features into web applications.
