Microsoft provided an update on how developers can get started and optimize their apps and websites for dual-screen devices.

The company has made available a preview SDK for Microsoft Surface Duo, and will release in the coming weeks a preview SDK for Windows 10. Microsoft also announced new web standards proposals to enable dual-screen experiences for websites and PWAs on both Android and Windows 10X.
Developers can download the preview SDK for Surface Duo, access documentation and samples for best practices, see UX design patterns, and more.

In the coming weeks, developers will have access to a pre-release version of the Windows SDK through the standard Insider builds. Microsoft plans to provide you with the Microsoft Emulator on February 11th as well as new APIs for dual-screen support, documentation, and code samples.

The preview SDK for Microsoft Surface Duo includes the following: [...] An Android Emulator with a preview Surface Duo image that is integrated into Android Studio so you can test your app without a physical device.

The last bit, the emulator, allows us to have an early look at the user interface of the Surface Duo, Microsoft’s dual-screen smartphone, and that is exactly what Neowin did.
Their video shows how Microsoft Launcher will work across 2 screens, and how apps will multi-task over multiple screens and gives us an early look at the animations and other user interface features of the dual-screen phablet.
Much of the UI is however still based on AOSP Android, and will presumably not reflect the final product when Microsoft releases it.

Neowin: Hands on with the Surface Duo Emulator

There are only a handful of Microsoft apps pre-installed, including Edge, SwiftKey, and Microsoft Launcher.

At this point, you'd still get a better feel for what's to come with the Surface Duo by running the Microsoft Launcher preview app on your own phone. What we can see from the emulator is just how certain things work right now. For example, you can easily move apps to the other screen from multitasking, or that when you launch an app, the three icons on the dock move to the other screen to combine with that side's dock.

The Surface Duo SDK is now available for macOS and Linux

Last week, Microsoft announced the Surface Duo SDK, releasing that and an emulator for Windows. Via Twitter, Microsoft developer Guy Merin announced that the SDK is now available for macOS, although according to the download page, there's one for Linux as well.
The requirements shouldn't be any different from the SDK on Windows. You'll need to have the latest version of Android Studio installed, and then you can run the SDK and the emulator on top of it.

Last week, Microsoft also said that the Surface Neo/Windows 10X SDK and emulator will be available on February 11. Don't hold your breath to see this one available on macOS and Linux though.

Today, Microsoft is holding its Developer Day event focused on dual-screen experiences, and with it come a few announcements.

For starters, just like it had promised, the company has released the Microsoft Emulator and tools so developers can start working on developing for Windows 10X and dual-screen devices to make use of the new form factor. The emulator includes a tool that lets users view a 3D render of a Surface Neo-like device to see the effects of moving the screens around the hinge.
Microsoft also updated the Surface Duo SDK, which it released last month. The new version includes all of Microsoft's Java native samples as Kotlin samples, support for drag and drop across screens, and more.

Since the Surface Duo and Surface Neo run on different operating systems but have similar form factors, developers might want an easier way to develop for both devices at the same time. To that endeavor, Microsoft has released a new dual-screen SDK for Xamarin.Forms, as well as dual-screen modules for React Native.

Update: The webpage for the Microsoft Emulator and Windows 10X Emulator image is now live. Interestingly, both are available to download directly from the Microsoft Store. In order to create apps for Windows 10X, you'll need to download the latest preview of Visual Studio 2019 and the Windows Insider Preview SDK. Because the emulator relies on Hyper-V, you'll need Pro, Enterprise, or Education SKUs of Windows 10 in order to use it.

You can grab the first update to the Surface Duo SDK preview now. Microsoft shipped the 02022020 update yesterday and announced the changes in a developer blog post. The update addressed how screen size is reported, updates the DisplayMask API, and changes the Surface Duo Image Build Flavor to a USER build. Microsoft also details some behind the scenes changes in its post.

This update doesn't include any major features that will move the needle for average users, but that's not the point of this SDK preview. These changes help developers build and optimize apps for dual-screen experiences.

Microsoft: Microsoft Emulator and Windows 10X Emulator Image (Preview) build 19578 available now!

Today we released new versions of both the Microsoft Emulator and the Windows 10X Emulator Image (Preview) to the Microsoft Store. The updated Microsoft Emulator is version 1.1.54.0 and the updated Windows 10X Emulator Image is version 10.0.19578. This refresh includes many updates to Windows 10X including the Win32 Container. Test existing applications in the emulator on released versions of Windows
The Windows 10X Emulator Image version 10.0.19578 includes a new EULA that no longer requires it to be installed on a Windows Insiders machine. You can now install it on Windows 10 version 10.0.17763 or higher.

With released SDKs, developers can use this new configuration to test their existing apps on the dual-screen devices and to enhance their app experiences with dual-screen patterns; taking advantage of TwoPaneView class and leveraging the Wonder Bar with CompactOverlay.

While Microsoft has put the Surface Neo on the back burner, we have heard the Surface Duo is still full speed ahead.

Supporting the rumour, Microsoft has today released a refresh to their Microsoft Surface Duo Emulator Image.

Microsoft says they have more improvements planned for future releases.
