Microsoft has launched a new Office app that should serve as the starting point for anyone who wants to use Office products.

Simply called 'Office', it is designed to replace the 'My Office' app that's currently on offer, and should serve as a gateway to recent documents, Office desktop applications, or accessing the free version of Office, available online.
The new app will allegedly come preinstalled on Windows 10 devices, and won't require an Office 365 subscription to be used.

Those interested in downloading the app can do so on the Microsoft Store. Others will get it, eventually.

One of the goals of the app, according to The Verge, is to better promote Microsoft's free version of Office that can be found online. Apparently, Microsoft has struggled to properly promote the feature in the past, and is hoping to draw everyone's attention to it now.

Microsoft removes ability to install Office directly from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10

Over the last few weeks, users attempting to download Office applications from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 have been unable to do so, and instead, are being redirected to the Office website which would then automatically download the classic installer.

Unfortunately, it appears this change is deliberate, according to a Microsoft spokesperson:

People will continue to be able to find Office in the Store. If the Office image isn't already preinstalled, they will be directed to https://account.microsoft.com/ to install it.
This experience isn't great and ultimately undermines the whole point of the Microsoft Store. I want the Store to handle all my apps, and now I can't do that with Office.

Microsoft's having a busy Monday morning, and for anyone that uses Office on the go, its new app might be the major gamechanger.
The company's newly unveiled Office app is an attempt to put everything you might need in one place. Instead of grabbing separate apps for Word, Excel and Powerpoint (aka the Office Triforce), today's public preview puts them all together.

The app also includes a new Actions pane that should be especially effective for document editing on-the-go.
Details ahead of today's launch was otherwise a little scarce -- but nevermind, you can test them out for yourself starting this morning. The Office app preview is available on Google Play now, and for iOS users that are using Testflight. There's no date yet for when the app will launch outside of preview.

Don't expect it to run well on your tablet

Microsoft has followed through on its promise of a unified Office mobile app -- for some people, anyway. Following months of beta testing, the company has released the all-in-one productivity app for Android phone users. Like before, this lets you edit Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents without having to switch apps.

There are some catches. As Android Police warned, the current Android app isn't optimized for tablets or Chromebooks. You can't even use it in landscape mode. The iOS equivalent to the app is also nowhere to be seen at this point. We've asked Microsoft if it can elaborate on its plans.

This could still be a significant step forward for mobile productivity, so long as you're willing to invest in Microsoft's ecosystem.
This all-in-one approach might save you time if you're working on both a report and the presentation to sell that report to your boss.

Microsoft's new all-in-one Office app is now available for all, but tablets aren't supported

We've reached out to Microsoft to ask if tablet support is coming. It's also not clear if the separate Office applications will be discontinued at some point, in favor of the new combined app. If that does happen, I hope it's not before all the old functionality is ported over.
