Microsoft has created a new website for its upcoming console, the Xbox Series X, which reveals that the machine will be out this Thanksgiving. It’s not clear if this means Thanksgiving as a time frame or literally that day, which is Thursday, November 26. We have asked Microsoft for clarification.

Update 12:30 p.m.Pacific: The site now lists a “Holiday 2020” release instead of Thanksgiving.

This announcement comes on the same day that Sony revealed the specs for its PlayStation 5 and lead architect Mark Cerny went on a deep dive of topics such as SSD memory and its audio tech. The timing is probably not a coincidence.

A while back, a bunch of photos leaked giving us a proper look at the ports on the Xbox Series X, although there was some confusion over what some of them were. Now we know the long strip is for expansion cards, but we've also learned that the prototype ports weren't final. In a bad way.

Some users noticed in today's footage of the Xbox Series X that the SPDIF optical audio port was missing on some of the pictures. We reached out to Microsoft for comment, and a spokesperson confirmed to us that indeed, the SPDIF optical audio port will not be available on the retail units.

No. Xbox Series X will include ports for Networking (Ethernet), HDMI out, Seagate Storage Expansion Card and three USB 3.1 ports.
We also asked if the Xbox Series X will feature an IR Blaster, given that some accessories like the Xbox Media Remote use the IR Blaster to send commands to compatible television sets. Unfortunately, Microsoft confirmed that this too, has been removed.

Microsoft will opt for HDMI-CEC controls instead for the Xbox Media Remote. HDMI-CEC stands for "Consumer Electronics Control," and allows devices to send signals over a HDMI connection for things like power and volume control.

For those of us with speaker systems and headsets that have SPDIF optical audio connections such as the Astro A50 wireless dock and certain audio controllers, it looks like our headsets and accessories won't work with the Xbox Series X, despite Microsoft's prior statements that all existing accessories will be compatible.

The Xbox Series X will be missing the optical S/PDIF audio output that was present on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 hardware lines.

Microsoft could have another next-gen console up its sleeve in the form of the Xbox Series S, which has gone under the Lockhart codename in recent leaks and rumors. While the Xbox Series X will have the limelight, the rumored but far from confirmed Lockhart console could be a cheaper alternative for people who are perhaps not keen on dropping some $400 or more on a dedicated gaming machine.

I will probably buy the Xbox Series S, at least if it looks like the pic in the articles. The Xbox X and the new PlayStation 5 are way too ugly.

Microsoft appears to have ended production of new Xbox One X consoles for the Australian market several months ahead of the Xbox Series X’s launch later in the year. A similar situation is likely happening in the United States and other regions too.

The Xbox One X’s end-of-life status in Australia was first noticed by Press Start who confirmed with JB Hi-Fi and EB Games (two of Australia’s largest video game and electronic store chains) that the console had been removed from their systems and that no new stock was expected.

While no release date has been confirmed for the Xbox Series X console, it is expected to launch in either November or December which are around four months away. With pre-orders likely going live very soon, it does make sense that Microsoft would want to remove competition by taking the Xbox One X, which would be cheaper than the Series X, off the shelves.

I seriously don't know what to think about the Xbox Series S, I guess it's the least ugly upcoming console from Sony and M$. Perhaps it will look better in real life. But surely, designers must be able to do any better?
