Microsoft is killing off Wunderlist in May 2020 as it focuses on its own To Do app

It is no secret that since buying Wunderlist, Microsoft has wanted to -- ultimately -- close it down. The question on users' lips has been,"when?".
And now we have an answer. Microsoft has revealed that Wunderlist will be retired on May 6, 2020. So with just five months to go, what does this mean for users?

For the time being, nothing changes for existing users, but new sign-ups are not being accepted. When May 6 rolls around any to-dos stored in Wunderlist will no longer synchronize. Microsoft says, somewhat vaguely, that "for a period of time, you'll still be able to import your lists into To Do".

Back in December last year, we reported that Microsoft would discontinue the Wunderlist app in favour of Microsoft To Do on March 6.

Now that we’re now two days away, Microsoft is now sending emails to Wunderlist users notifying that it will shut down Wunderlist on March 6 and that it’s easier for users to import all your lists from Wunderlist to Microsoft To Do.

We have some important news for you. Wunderlist is shutting down on May 6th, 2020. We hope that our new app, Microsoft To Do, will become the new home for all your lists and tasks. It’s built by the Wunderlist team and available for free on Android , iOS , Windows , Mac and web.
While Wunderlist will be no more from March 6, users will be able enjoy equal, if not better experience with Microsoft To Do as behind the scene the same Wunderlist developer team is also working on Microsoft To Do.
Based on the feedback from Wunderlist users, Microsoft has made several changes and additions to To Do app experience.

I made the change in December. It has actually become a very good to do software and will migrate your Wunderlist data automatically.

Microsoft is bringing some major improvements to its To Do app on all platforms. The highlights include the addition of new All and Completed smart lists, bringing a new way to view lists, group contents by list or date, updated Today and Week view in the Planned list on Android, and more.

The new All and Completed smart lists are highly requested features that let users see all their tasks in one view. The tasks are segregated into lists that can be collapsed depending on preference. The Completed smart list lets users view all Completed tasks at once. The smart lists feature can be turned on from the settings and is now rolling out to the Windows, Android, and iOS apps.

Microsoft today announced that Microsoft To Do will soon be better integrated with the Microsoft 365 productivity suite. In a two-step process, the company will start rolling out the new Tasks app in Microsoft Teams in August, and Microsoft 365 apps including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint will integrate with Microsoft To Do next year.

“By Q121, we will support @mentions in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, which means that whenever someone @mentions you, the tasks you’re mentioned in will automatically appear in your “Assigned to you” smart list.
The existing integrations with Outlook and Microsoft Planner are already useful, and it will be interesting to see if Microsoft can connect its task manager app with other Microsoft 365 apps.
