Microsoft announced its second-generation HoloLens at Mobile World Congress in February but didn't mention when the device will be available. Now, Microsoft EVP Harry Shum has revealed that the mixed reality headset will go on sale sometime in September.
The tech giant's upcoming headset promises a more comfortable experience than its predecessor. We were able to confirm just how comfortable the headset is -- it felt more balanced and less hot -- when we tested it out at MWC.

The device was also designed to be more immersive. It has double the field of view of its predecessor, which Microsoft says is like switching from a 720p television to a 2K set for each eye, and has retina-tracking capabilities. As you can imagine, the headset won't come cheap: it has a $3,500 price tag, which isn't really surprising, seeing as its target audiences are enterprise users and institutions.

Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, the second generation of its mixed reality headset, is expected to start shipping this year.
Microsoft executive vice president of artificial intelligence and research Harry Shum, speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai today, said the device would be available as soon as September.

“We have started collecting expressions of interest for HoloLens 2 pre-orders and, as part of our standard practice for gathering feedback, have shared near-final prototypes with some customers, but have not announced a date for general availability.”
HoloLens 2 is designed to be more immersive and comfortable.
Microsoft said it’s improved its visual display system, so holograms are more vibrant and realistic, allowing text and intricate details of 3D images to be viewed more easily, at lower power. It’s also doubled the headset’s field of view, which it said is akin to moving from a 720-pixel resolution television to a 2K television for each of a user’s eyes. [...]

After a semi-surprise debut at Mobile World Congress in February, Microsoft is now shipping HoloLens 2 to customers, the company announced today.
But at $3,500, it's still a device mainly targeted at businesses who can really take advantage of AR-assisted, hands-free computing.

Since its initial announcement, Microsoft says it's shared early HoloLens 2 prototypes with customers and received plenty of feedback. The shipping version hasn't changed much from the first units we've seen, according to Greg Sullivan, Microsoft's director of Mixed Reality. Still, he says the company took that commentary seriously.
We're still a long way off from getting consumer-friendly AR glasses, but HoloLens 2 proves that business-friendly AR is already here.

Today, the $3,500 HoloLens 2 is going on sale in the United States, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Australia and New Zealand, the same countries where it was previously available for pre-order.

The team also greatly enhanced the overall feel of wearing the device. It’s not light, at 1.3 pounds, but with the front visor that flips up and the new mounting system that is far more comfortable.
Taken together, all of the changes result in a more comfortable and smarter device, with reduced latencies when you look at the various objects around you and interact with them.

Now Microsoft is confirming that it’s looking into reports of display problems from a growing number of early adopters, though it’s unclear at this stage whether the problems are hardware, software, or user specific.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson, while the “new type of display” uses “a set of balanced display trade-offs” to achieve its performance — trade-offs that might, as suggested above, lead to some variation in experience based on factors such as eye distance — the company is looking into complaints about the displays themselves.

“We are aware of reports from some developers experiencing issues with their displays,” the company told VentureBeat, “and we’re working closely with them to understand the underlying cause.”
The reports have been growing for weeks in Reddit threads (via RoadtoVR), before and after a statement from Microsoft’s Alex Kipman discussing some of the characteristics of HoloLens 2’s display technology — and warning against making unwarranted assumptions from single-lens camera-captured images of the binocular display

It remains to be seen how widespread the problems are, and whether they will be correctable via software or some form of user calibration. HoloLens 2 is presently available only through a handful of Microsoft enterprise partners, and some customers on Reddit are continuing to report lengthy delays in sourcing headsets — months, with some projected deliveries stretching into May 2020.

Microsoft seems to be ramping up its team for HoloLens, Mixed Reality, and AI. Bloomberg is breaking the news that Ruben Caballero is now corporate vice president, Hardware Design & Technology at Microsoft, according to his updated LinkedIn page.

The news is particularly exciting because Bill Stillwell, who worked on Xbox until very recently, is also now working on the Mixed Reality team.
In a tweet posted on March 28th, Stillwell noted he was "Moving over to the team that makes HoloLens! Going to focus on producing world-class consumer AR/VR experiences in the MS ecosystem."

The recent hires of Caballero and Stillwell suggest Microsoft could be moving to a new phase of HoloLens and Mixed Reality, perhaps finally making its long-awaited push into the consumer space.
