    Re: memtest86 results

I also recently ran memtest86 and it found 1532 errors! I hadn't been having any problems, like BSODs, freezes, etc (apart from the bloody F-Secure spyware scan - don't go there!), but I splashed out on some new memory anyway, and have upgraded my two 256Kb sticks for two 512kb sticks from Crucial (the 1Gb was out of stock). The system does seem to run a little faster, but the difference isn't awe inspiring, and it didn't fix the FSIS problem. I haven't done another memtest86 scan as yet, but your post has made me wonder just how reliable the memtest results actually are. If there shouldn't be even one error, then I find it astonishing that my PC was running at all, let alone without any problems, with the amount of errors memtest reported. :doubt:

Well memtest is reliable, but just because it shows errors doesn't always mean bad ram. There's various reasons for ram errors. Also ram can have errors in memtest and system can be stable....as long as programs don't access memory address where the errors reside.

    Hi lodore,

Heat can cause memory test errors if your case has less than adequate ventilation. I put together a desktop last year that failed all my memory tests (Memtest86+, GoldMemory, and Windows Memory Diagnostic) until I removed the case's side panel. A mesh-type side panel solved the problem for me. Memory tests will stress your system's overall stability.

    hi Nick,
what about having the case side off and then running memtest again?

That would be my first troubleshooting step.

Something else to look for while your case is open are defective capacitors. Depending on the age of the computer, it is quite common. (It happened to me)

    ram update

    hello,
today i got my replacement ram and my pc is working great except....,
    IE7 crashed with errors.
do you think that when IE7 used the bad ram from the old sticks it got partly corropt meaning that it still crashes with the new good ram?

    Re: ram update

I would guess that if you use IE7 then you used IE6 before. Was IE6 having problems with the old ram or did you just upgrade to IE7 because you could? Also what mobo, old ram and new ram do you have?

Why do you feel your old ram was bad and needed replacing?

    Re: ram update

    simple really
i got quite alot of bsod's
also application hangs and getting stuck on saving your settings when logging out.
also programs randomly crashed e.g. opera, firefox kis6.0 etc etc
so i posted a question at the corsair forums and told the ram guy that this was happerning and he told me to change the ram timmings in bios but i told him that i have never changed the settings in bios.
i also told him that after the crash i checked the event log and it told me the faulting memory address so he got me to fill out a rma form and the ram came today.
yesterday IE7 crashed once so i checked the event log
then tryed opening IE7 again crashed again went back to event log and it used the same faultly memory address as the first time.
also somewhere i read that someone once had a corropt windows paging file so deleted it and on once rebooted it created a new non corropt one but dont know how likely that is.
since i put the new ram in it seems that the computer is more stable but still has some odd issues.

    like IE7 randomly crashed yesterday.
i logged on and off a few times and then logged on and the pc was really slow responding to commands even thou the cpu usage was 0 it took like 10seconds to get a minimized window to show off properly.
then when i logged off the login screen showed but with no username so i clicked around and in the end a little username box came up with my username so i clicked on ok and it logged me in.
but those problems only started when i turned on windowblinds so atm its unloaded and the computer works fine.

May I jump in with my question for memory modules?
I have 2 modules, old one is PC2700 (166 MHZ), and the new one is Corsair PC3200 (200 MHz). Processor is AMD Athlon XP 2200+ and the motherboard is ASRock K7VT4A Pro. These are informations from CPUZ utility.
I see there that FSB:DRAM is 1:1, this means that memory is runnung on 133 MHz. But as I can see that the old one can work on 166 MHz is it better to put it on FSB+33. One more question, if I overclok my processor should I back it on 1:1 or it can stay on FSB+33.
I hope You understood me and thank's for help anyway.

K7 processors don´t benefit from high memory bandwidth (FSB limitation). Instead, they prefer low latencies. So, you´ll gain little from having the memory bus clocked higher than the FSB.
If you overclock, keep the FSB/RAM ratio 1:1 if you can.

So no matter if old memory can work on 166 MHz I should keep FSB/RAM ratio 1:1
This is how it is configured now and memory is running on 133 MHz.
    lucas1985, thank's for that information.
