Matrix is an open standard for interoperable, decentralized, real-time communication over IP. It can be used for any type of IP communication: IM, VoIP, or IoT data. One system already operating on Matrix is the open team collaboration app, Riot. While Riot is described as "a simple and elegant collaboration environment that gathers all of your different conversations and app integrations into one single app," it can actually communicate with any user anywhere in the Matrix ecosphere.

As you may know it, I am a fervent user of the chat protocol Matrix. If you don’t know what Matrix is, this is basically a protocol developed by the Matrix Foundation. Matrix is made to be federated, it means that servers implementing correctly the Matrix specification can communicate and therefore, users that are not on the same servers can still talk to each other.

But wait Jae, we already have countless other chat apps already, Telegram, Signal and even XMPP which is federated!

I have been using Matrix since 2016 now and it has considerably improved over time, coming from “barely usable” to “let’s host my own homeserver”.
Matrix has several other features such as E2EE (end-to-end encryption) which is now enabled by default and bridges which can be used to temporarily bridge a Matrix room and a slack chat for instance.

As of June 2019, Matrix is out of beta, and the protocol is fully suitable for production usage.

Big news today: Element, the startup founded by the team who created Matrix, just raised $30M of Series B funding in order to further accelerate Matrix development and improve Element, the flagship Matrix app. The round is led by our friends at Protocol Labs and Metaplanet, the fund established by Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype and Kazaa). Both Protocol Labs and Metaplanet are spectacularly on board our decentralised communication quest, and you couldn't really ask for a better source of funding to help take Matrix to the next level. You can read all about it from the Element perspective over at the Element Blog, but suffice it to say that this is enormous news for the Matrix ecosystem as a whole. In addition to transforming the Element app, on the Matrix side this means that there is now concrete funding secured to:

finish building out P2P Matrix and get it live (including finishing Dendrite, given our P2P work builds on Dendrite!)

implement native decentralised E2EE voip/video conferencing for Matrix

fully build out our relative decentralised reputation system in order to combat abuse in Matrix.

Matrix for the masses platform Element One goes live: $5 a month with WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram bridges

Element, which makes Matrix-based communications and collaboration tools, has launched a consumer-oriented version of its messaging platform, complete with bridges for WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram.

The firm's Matrix Services (EMS) has been the acceptable corporate face of the Matrix network for some time now, charging customers reluctant to roll their own open source a fee for its wares.

The company's new product – Element One – effectively bundles three of the bridges that EMS reckons will appeal most to consumers – WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram – into a $5-a-month package.

Having to spend $5 might give some potential customers, who have become used to the freebie offerings of the messaging giants, pause for thought. However, if we've learned anything from the social media giants over the last few years, it's that freemium services are never truly free.
Lewis told us that bridges to Facebook Messenger and iMessage featured strongly on the roadmap, since both were commonly used by consumers: "if they can continue chatting in their system, and you can have all of that chat in one place, it's much better for them."
