The problem is it seems sometimes you sacrifice much more than "a little". And if signature based solutions like Avast can compensate the lack of proactive security by signature detection, not signature based solution has nothing to compensate the lack by. As for me I'd chose solution that provides maximum security in default mode and does not go absolutely "paranoid" in the same time. I can bear some reasonable number of alerts if it allows to pass the required "must pass" tests with a good score. But if even with the max settings a solution passes "must pass" tests poor this is definitely "no go".
