    Hello TheSpirit,
Personally, I do prefer a stand-alone firewall/ packet filter. Any other protection I need/want, I will add myself.

Well, I don't know of any test evaluating this aspect :doubt:
But I'm pretty sure that the best filtering can be made with a Linux/BSD box with some IDS checking for network abnormalities.

It would be an interesting project, to put a fully secured PC in as the front end/router between your working PC and the PC's on my Lan.

I would consider using SmoothWall Express it's free and it is far and above what you would aquire by using a Standard pc built firewall to simply "route" filtered packets between pc's on your LAN... (it does require that you dedicate an old pentium (low end works fine). By the way it's FREE!

    Hi:

I will consider that. Herbalist uses SmoothWall as well!

    I have a working old IBM Pentium 2, would that be a candidate? 400 mhtz I think.:doubt:

Yep... You will probably only need to install extra Nic's and maybe some more memory (512 MB should do).

From their website, http://untangle.com/ they list the following functions, all built-in...
    Spam Blocker
    Web Filter
    Protocol Control
    Virus Blocker
    Spyware Blocker
    Phish Blocker
    Intrusion Prevention
    Attack Blocker
    Firewall
    Remote Access Portal
    OpenVPN
    Untangle Reports
    Router
...also free, but needs 512Mb/ram also. Just dLo the .iso, burn to disc, boot to disc and it takes care of formatting and installing. It even takes care of all updates. PC's hooked up to it no longer need to have security installed.

    Hello 19Monty64,

Thanks a bunch for this info... However I do have a few reservation:

Has anyone ascertain the currency and relevancy of updates such as Antivirus & Spyware as well as it's actual functional effectiveness before making the recommendation: "PC's Hooked up to it, no longer need to have security?"

From my reading on their web site it all looks incredibly well rounded. very Impressive actually.

    However:
Does it deliver real effective security?

    Any real world tests?

I'd love to read about this product based on actuals.

All unneeded modules can be disabled, and real-world testing is what I would like to see. But like all security apps-no matter how highly recommended-can only be juged by trial and error. I'd be the first to point out any weaknesses that it had, but so far I've heard none. If I had a spare 512, I'd already have it installed.

This product looks like the prayers of a lot of small business system Administrators are now answered! A single point of control for the entire security spectrum and for Free!

I will certainly give it a try within the next few weeks. I'll post about my experience with it.

Not free for business, but it comes with Support for the $$$... Discounts for muliple-year licenses, additional scanning engines available for a very reasonable price, where assistance is only a phone-call away. Free for home-users though-no support except forums!
