Down Detector shows a sharp rise in customers reporting outages since around 0445 GMT today. Some voice calls are getting through but all 4G and SMS services are completely jiggered.

Londoners, for example, are finding that the Countdown timers at bus stops are all crippled as they can't communicate with London's transport executive, TfL.
Connected cars and cabs are also being crippled.

It doesn't end there, because some major MVNO (virtual networks) that piggyback O2 signals are experiencing the same disruption.
At 1000 the company confirmed it has found the source of the problem but has no timings for a fix

The Swedish equipment maker, which manufactures much of the backend gear in the world's cellular networks, said today the outage was down to an expired certificate in a version of its management software used by a number of European telcos to provide services to subscribers.

As a result, some 32 million people were without cellular service, and had to resort to Wi-Fi where possible.
Ericsson said that, with the cause of the issue now isolated, it was working to get all of its customers back online.

"The [National Health Service] trust I work for has lost connection of all the Apple iPads that are used for patient report forms," a Reg reader told us. "This is extremely worrying seeing that every emergency service will be using a 4G network for the entirety of their critical communications. This outage would've put lives at risk if ESN was live!"

Mobile operator O2 has said it will compensate its customers following a day of disruption to its data networks.
Customers with a monthly subscription will be refunded the cost of two days' service by the end of January.
Pay As You Go customers will get 10% extra when they top up their phone in the new year or 10% off when they buy data for mobile broadband devices.
