I seem to remember that the license for Malware Defender is lifetime with updates. Does that still apply...I can't tell by looking at the website.

P.S. I am still using SSM...have been for a long time on XP ;)

WHOSE lifetime? Mine or Malware Defender's? :)

NOTE: Torchsoft's "purchase" links still lead to a dead-end. Further deponent sayeth naught.

Lifetime of the product, respectively "Free updates in the lifetime of this product.", like the program help tells us.

    Cheers

bellgamin - Just checked and the purchase links for the Registry Workshop and ASCII Art Studio appear functional, just the one for MD is not working.

Did you click on the "Purchase" links for MD? Obviously you did NOT click on those links. They are dead-ends.

The Torchsoft website is up now and has been up all along. The puzzling situation is the fact that all products sold by that website can be purchased --- with the sole exception being Malware Defender.

It is NOT possible to buy MD from the Torchsoft website. This has been the case since Stem's post on March 20 (post #18 in this thread).

The conclusion to be deduced from this situation is quite evident, if you think it through.

I am hoping MD is still around. I have seen similar events with both ProcessGuard and AppDefend/RegDefend. The developers stopped development either for personal reasons or lack of profit. HIPS programs because of their complexity have never been popular with novice Internet users. It is ironic both PG and AD/RD are still being sold although both have not seen any development in at least two years and there is no longer any support of these products. At least we have seen a recent update to MD (last month). Hoping we will see some more.

IMO MD is still around & will remain so for the foreseeable future. My tea leaves say a metamorphosis is in progress, but not unto demise.

Lifetime licenses are not a good business model for security apps. Why? Because security apps have to continuously be updated in order to deal with ever-more-powerful malware.

Hoping that license fees from new users will cover the costs of continuously updating the versions for lifetime-licensed users is tantamount to a Ponzi scheme. Eventually the balloon will burst.

    On the good side

    a) Xioalin applies the correct ethics by not facilitating purchase anymore

    b) Life time lisence model is not a viable business model, Sandboxie and WinpAtrol seem to be the only ones who manage to stay in business

    c) MD's x32 bit defense will stay viable until end of life of XP. XP SP3 is the last service pack, no major changes anymore. On top of that MD is intended to deal with vulnabilities in the x32 NT kernel, so for existing lisence holders it is a loss but with limited effect.

    d) Chinese market is a huge market, possible scenario's: Xiaolin joins a another (bigger) company, knowledge capital of MD will be secured, code will be in the deal, so a re-brand (pro security scenario) will be in the making or code knowledge will be re-used in another commercial application (Boclean scenario). So MD will be phased out, but bits of code and knowledge will "phenix in" to another application.

    Just me 2 cents

Xiaolin said he's changing domain name and server provider in this thread (sandworm is him).

But there's rumor also says that he's joining another security company 360safe. If anyone still remembers mj0011,who had written several POCs that caused MD made several updates in a short time,he is also working for 360safe. Well, just rumor.

And of course you have the facts to back this up.

To all: Please don't post speculation. It does no one any good, can be harmful to those involved, and also may end up making the posted look foolish.

It would be nice to see a post from xiaolin about Malware Defender. Maybe he just made a coding error and that's why the site won't let you buy MD.

I've sent an email to Xiaolin with a link to this thread if he would like to make a post.

Hopefully MD lives on, best classical HIPS available imho.
