Froggie, Does that mean you don't trust Marcrium's implementation of "Trim"? How about Rollback Rx which you've shown doesn't really support Trim. Would it running Windows 8.1 SSD Defrag solve the problem?
No, I trust it without issue... but it only TRIM's the space it is restoring not any leftovers from the previous image. it's best just to do the restore then TRIM the balance of the drive with "standard" processes. Win 7 doesn't have a standard process to do this so a user came up with the "SSDtool"... it works just like W8/8.1 OPTIMIZATION does. I think your 2nd question pertains to Rollback... if it does the answer is NO. Rollback inhibits all forms of TRIM on its protected drive(s), even standard Windows OPTIMIZATION under W8/8.1 (anymore RBrx questions should probably be in a more appropriate thread)
THANKS! I think I'll go with Macrium Free v5 for now and follow your advice. I will seriously consider upgrading to the paid version when I move to Windows 10. That won't be until after Win 10 comes out and enough time has passed for it to prove its' stability.
I too ran a test with System Files option set to "Y", but I was unable to reproduce the results you got, as Macrium backed up the empty folders just fine. So, I do not know what happened with you. It must have been some temporary glitch. Sometimes, to remove such annoying glitches, all you need to do is to just reinstall the software.
Are you using recovery media to make backup? It seems that creating an image using rec. media will backup those files. See here: http://support.macrium.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5593
First copy I do always with cd. I have used many programs and only macrium creates these files copies.
Last post on that thread: It's from 2013 though, so I don't know if it is still the case with latest version.
Thanks for the info. I remember many recovery PE media, for example, Acronis TI and Terabyte Image for Windows appear to have VSS enabled?
I doubt VSS is enabled at all in almost any PE build. It's only needed to LOCK (in time) a LIVE OS and no one is gonna be imaging the PE's OS partition itself. All the other available volumes will be unLOCKed at that time and VSS is not needed to provide a point in time on those.
Are you telling me that Macrium backs up Pagefile and hiberfile when a backup is initiated from WinPE disk? This is absurd! I am using an old PC with only 3 GB of RAM installed so luckily my pagefile is only 3 GB, what if someone has 16 GB RAM installed? Will Marcium backup all 16 GB of pagefile in that case? It should not matter if VSS is involved or not. A software that is intelligent enough to determine what sectors have changed in order to accomplish a Rapid Delta Restore from WinPE, should be able to determine which part of the disk is the pagefile and avoid backing up the data inside it.
I've tested system image creation with Macrium 5.3. When I created an image from WinPE, it's size DID NOT get larger than a size of an image created from within Windows (I use 1 GB pagefile). Image was larger for approx. 300 MB but I found some changes in c:\users folder that could contribute to it. When I moved pagefile to other partition, image size also didn't change... So I can assume that content of pagefile is not included in backup. EDIT: I've also created 8GB pagefile and image size was the same as with 1GB pagefile.
Macrium Reflect Workstation PE 6.0.638 full backup with CD 12,8 GB full backup with CD without pagefile end hiberfil 7,62 GB
I always had problems purging with v5, but v6 seems to have fixed it. I have not had any purging problems with v6.
Hello, A new update has been released, version 6.0.684: Download Page: http://www.macrium.com/Download.aspx?type=home Release Notes: http://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v6/v6.0.684/details6.0.684.htm Also note that the Macrium Reflect FREE Version 6 Edition has now been released: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
Thanks for the info... And contrary to what Froggie said the new free version does have an important additional feature compared to v. 5: Now differential backups are supported. No Rapid Delta Restores though... Cheers manolito
With the release of v6 Free I got my answer today; RDC is not part of the Free version (as was to be expected): http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/Upgrade from v6 Free What coupon code (preferably 20% off) is still valid today?
