ls /var/log/messages ubuntu

    have you got that file? because i had to enable it. i think if you upgraded from the release before the current one (natty and oneiric, i think. wow my memory is bad lol)

    will it still get archived, where is that configured?

    should there be /var/log/secure too? because i don't have that file.

    syslog configuration. Not necessary. You can configure anything you want. You can configure logging to go to /var/log/nevergonnagiveyouup if you want. Just the matter of separation and aesthetics.

    rick rolled, damn. thanks lol.

    i think it was a fixed bug that editted out /var/log/messages in /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf. that's where i re-enabled it by taking out the # anyway. thanks :)
