On failure rate. Certainly far from the last word, but Consumer Reports did a survey on desktop repair frequency between 2002 -2006. 77,700 computer owners responded. Data adjusted to eliminate differences solely linked to the age and the usage of the product. Their statisticians say differences of 3 points or less are not meaningful between brands. Results reported in terms of percentages of computers sold that needed repair or suffered a serious problem.

Apple 11%
Sony 15%
Dell 16%
Lenovo (IBM) 16%
Compaq Emachines HP all 18%
Gateway 19%

Except for Apple no statistically meaningful difference. As you say, luck of the draw. And the more computers a company sells, the greater the number of unlucky folks out and about.
