Millions of consumers are eagerly anticipating Amazon’s annual online shopping extravaganza, Amazon Prime Day. This year, Amazon is offering more than 1 million deals through a 48-hour period which begins on October 13. The annual retail event is one of the many perks included in a Prime subscription and its discounts are exclusively available to Amazon’s 150 million Prime members. But it isn’t just consumers who look forward to this annual shopping bonanza: hackers do, too. Researchers at Check Point have conducted an analysis of cyber threats related to Amazon’s Prime Day in the weeks leading up to the event. They found an alarming increase in the number of registered domains related to Amazon that are malicious.

In the 30 days, there was a 21% increase in domains registered containing the word “Amazon”, compared to the previous month. More than a quarter (28%) of those domains have been found to be malicious and another 10% suspicious.
Furthermore, the number of domains registered containing the words “Amazon” and “Prime” has doubled within the last 30 days, with 20% of those domains being malicious.

Online shoppers are urged to be on the lookout for fake websites and phishing scams targeting Amazon customers today.

Amazon’s annual Prime Day, which sees the retail giant offer discounts on thousands of items, takes place today and tomorrow (October 13-14).
New research from fraud prevention firm Bolster has detailed how scammers are targeting Prime customers with phishing campaigns and fraudulent websites.

“As shoppers gear up for two days of great deals, cyber criminals are prepping to prey on the unwary, taking advantage of those who let their guard down to snap up bargains,” the company said in a blog post.

Researchers claim that cybercrooks are using fake Amazon branding to lure shoppers into clicking links in phishing emails.
The number of fraudulent websites that make use of the e-commerce company’s branding increased dramatically between August and September, Bolster said.
No such thing as a free lunch
Other scams currently doing the rounds include websites offering a free iPhone 11 Pro for survey participants. The victims are asked a number of questions and are told to enter their credit card details to activate their competition entry.

Security experts have warned online shoppers to beware of scam emails and texts over the next couple of days as the Amazon Prime Day e-commerce bonanza gets underway.

The 48-hour sales event for Prime subscribers is said to be an even bigger money-maker for Amazon than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
However, where there is money and consumers, cyber-criminals are usually not far away, warned Charles Brook, a threat intelligence researcher at Tessian.

“The most common tactic will be for scammers to impersonate Amazon in phishing emails, luring consumers with ‘too good to be true’ deals or prize offerings to encourage them into clicking malicious links or entering their details into fake websites,” he explained.

Tessian detected a 133% increase in phishing emails related to Amazon Prime Day or Amazon Store on the second day of the event last year, compared to a normal daily average for the month.

Tessian urged shoppers not to click on Prime Day links in unsolicited emails and double-check senders’ email addresses rather than their display names.

“Scammers take advantage of the fact that, on mobile, emails only show a display name which makes it easier for a bad actor to impersonate Amazon and send a message from an unknown email address,” it said.
