Thanks for the heads up 'Hammer'.

As for the rest of you, could you keep the squabbling about which antivirus is best out of this thread? Thank you.

    A cautionary tale.

While checking what programs are running on my computer last night, I found two .exe items related to Panda NanoScan and TotalScan. I thought that these have no business running while not in use, they're only using memory and resources and I terminated them right away.

What started the alarm bells ringing was the presence of TotalScan.

The Avira AV guard had flagged TotalScan previously informing me that there was a trojan bundled up in the download and I was surprised to see it on my PC as it appeared at the time that the transmission had been blocked. Not so, Avira blocked the trojan, it appears in the log though details are scant, but the rest of the program infested my box! There it was, alive and active and bold as brass.

At the time I had put it down to an Avira FP and thought no more about it.

Well, to make a long story short, I went to Add and Delete and ran the uninstaller. A stubborn, write-protected, core-componant refused to budge.

My suspicions were about to be confirmed.

I tried East-Tec Eraser with a similar result, couldn't uninstall. Then I looked more closely at the dialogue box which E-TE supplied and was horrified to discover that TotalScan was culling information from my PC without my knowledge or consent.

The same thing happened when I tried to uninstall NanoScan, a core component remained.

Eventually, I managed to get rid of both items using TuneUp Utilities and I zeroed the free space on the C drive to be sure.

I don't know if it succeeded in transmitting anything; there were no alerts!

Even if it did, I'm not concerned since I don't use the PC for sensitive operations such as online banking and most of my documents are written in a minority language that only a handful of people in Scotland and Ireland would understand.

Needless to say, Panda inc. are tainted in my mind after that and I won't be using their products again!

TotalScan, no way! More like TotalScam to my way of thinking.

    Cheers all.

Maybe asking in the NOD forum will yield some info?

It seems useless. I tested a handful of malicious samples against it and it reports them as clean

How can you forget about the ESET scan if it is brand new?
