A lot of those proxies were slow and some of them messed up pages. Anonymizer.com isn't free. It's nagware and it restricts access to some sites. http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/images/anonymizernag.gif
The page it restricted was http://www.privacy.net/analyze/, which sort of leads you to wonder, since that's the sort of page you'd go to to check how well it really does protect you.

I think I'll spend some time using those next week and see what the best one seems to be.

What are some sites to test these proxies out on? I've tried http://www.privacy.net/analyze/ and www.pcflank.com and I get errors with some and some do fine. Anonymizer refused to load the first one altogether.

I'm getting some interesting findings so far. Megaproxy seems to be the quickest and easiest to use so far, but it won't let me post to forms for some reason.

Thanks for the list JacK. For some strange reason my connection refused to load panicware.com and I had to use one of those proxies just to log in to see how my reseller account was doing. Sheesh!

    Hi Mike,

Here are two test sites :

    http://inet-police.com/
    http://www.astalavista.com/privacy/data.asp

Some forum don't allow to post when your are behind an anonymiser.

I didn't try them all : I only use proxysocks when I need a good anonymity for something (with SockCap32 for pager for instance)

    Rgds,

I found that many of Web Anonymizers or Program Anonymizers slow down your surfing or display pages incorrectly!

I think it’s a good idea that needs lot of work! IMHO

This is one topic that is covered in-depth in the GnomeTome I am writing. There are many issues to consider, -- like the ones you have been kicking around.

Mike, the forms will rarely work if using an anonyproxy. However, I encourage people to set up an email account with someone like paxemail.com, setting it up from the start with a confirmed anonymous proxy. Make this the email box you NEVER go to without making sure you're using a proxy. Entering with a proxy each time, any emails sent from this web-based email service will show the IP of the proxy server. Try it - send email to another private email box you have and look at the headers. Point is: when you run into the problems with forms, find a regular email address and write them from your secure web mail, which, I can't stress enough, you NEVER go to without an anonymous proxy. This way, you always have a means of sending private mail without your REAL IP and without having to use an obvious anonymous email service. This is one way of getting around the form issue.

    Good luck!

    Hi John ;)

AFM (I am a bit parano) all my mails go through a proxysocks with a personal SMTP server : never my own IP
appears in the headers. For secure webmail ziplip.
Idem for NGs I don't trust : I use News Surfer through a proxysocks and for forum I don't really trust : IE or Opera
    through a proxysocks.

    Cheers,

I hadn't gotten around to trying out web email yet (ok, I hadn't thought of it :D ). I have used safeweb successfully with yahoo before. This was quite a while back.
With this error above, I was trying to log in to check my sales stats. Some of the proxies logged into it ok, some didn't.

They are slow. Megaproxy and anonymizer seem fairly quick, but compared to direct surfing they're still slow. I've also noticed that some of them have images loading directly from the web site, rather than having them pass through the proxy. Kinda self-defeating.

    Jack,

I agree with you on Proxysocks - just try to get people to use them!

If you begin with a TRULY anonymous proxy and ALWAYS use one when going to your "private" web email - your IP will not appear in the header. The IP of the proxy will appear. And again, the more exotic locale for the proxy the better. I like the anonymous proxies found in Africa and Asia myself. Most anywhere they don't speak english as a first, second or third language. :)
