Kernel update is inevitable although you can keep the older kernel and use that but its definitely not recommended as critical security patches are applied.

So this means I have to choose the level 5 updates and do an update. Is every release of kernel done for the security?

Kernel patches are for security, stability and solving hardware issues or adding newer hardware support.

if you like green but not MINT's glaring green, Bisigi has the right one for you. Its called Eco and can be added by installing Bisigi ppa. Preview is for Eco dark which is still not stable, you get default Eco theme which doesn't have the dark background.

Personally I wouldn't do that. I don't have a smashing argument for it, though. Just a gut feeling.

As you've noticed, Mint has behaved better for you than Ubuntu has, despite repeated exhortations by some people how that's not possible. I say it'd probably be a good idea to leave well enough alone.

Excellent advise there, next time Windows asks for updates, suggest you do the same, keep it virgin there. No SP, no Win update and of course no updates for Ubuntu. Oh yes when you get hacked, don't go blamin either there. :D

    :D :thumb: :D

And the waited moment came.I was trying to print a map from the firefox and suddenly the system begin to work slowly, and then I wanted to move a file to trash and it said you do not have any permissions.I wanted to delete it again did not let me do it.I tried to restart andI could not boot into mint a couple of times. Later id did disk check rebooted and everything is fine.Maybe a printer driver issue? The system had found the driver and I did nothing.

Cet, this is a hardware issue, not distro but try running Fedora for a while to get better perspective, just install easy life and all codecs java media players is easy to install via that. If Fedora gives you issues, its 100% hardware problem.

Yes now I am sure that this is a hardware problem.Minutes ago I tried to boot and I got this error:
error:hdo,1 out of disk grub rescue>
I tried to enter the bios and I saw the line ''hard disk error '' at the bottom.
And there was something like this:3rd Master ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

So I will take the computer to the shop for a repair. After that I will have to install Mint again.Oh my.

I doubt it. My personal experience and anecdotal evidence from others seem to indicate otherwise.

Again, no smashing argument for it, unfortunately, as I'm not entirely clear what modifications the Mint team makes. I guess the best argument I can make for it - other than it works for me, and for some other people - is that it doesn't hurt to try Mint anyway and see. Installation takes only 15-20mins, and it's more or less still Ubuntu, only better.

That was my initial suspicion, till today hdds and optical drivers remain to be weakest links in a computer. Even though I have seen hdds including few of mine still running after seven years or regular service.

After they give you a new hdd, just install LUCID and enjoy your computer.

    I absolutely love Linux Mint.
It is the best of Ubuntu with a better menu system and more.
I really do wish there were a way to rollback some updates
as at times they can break important functions.

Yes I love Mint too - Ubuntu, fine tuned, tweaked and polished with added cool tools

Agreed also on the rollback of updates. That would be great. Although I haven`t suffered from any update related problems (or indeed any problems since using Mint) I still only have level 1 & 2 updates set in MintUpdate just to be safe.

Good luck Cet. Hopefully a new hdd will end your troubles and you can install whatever distro you like..............

Start with a green one ;)

Perhaps - but my Mint system is still affected and so are obviously many others.

Thats strange then because this issue no longer exists in Lucid after the patch which was in the first week of this month. Earlier on, disc checking would take eons.
