I love installing Xfce on older machines and Linux Mint 15 Xfce is a nice replacement OS for low resource machines, "AIO OS" and I like the new whisker menu!

Still using Maya LTS, don't really need any of the new fancy stuff. Whisker Menu isn't much better than Application Finder with keyboard shortcuts, but I might add it for convenience if resource usage is light (less than 10 MB RAM).

Here is a default Linux Mint 15 Xfce running idle inside a VirtualBox using 1 core @ 3.6ghz and 1GB Ram, so it should give you an idea

TIP Always disable the cache in your Browsers on Linux, I would on windows too, I promise you your browsers will start up faster, the cache drags the browser down!

Did the RAM just spike up after being stable when CPU reached 100%? Sure looks different from the review. Anyways, can you point out which is the Whisker Menu process, cause I can't seem to find it? Maybe add Application Finder at the same time for comparison?

Interesting tip, but I thought it increased browsing speed though? I'm more interested in that than startup speed, which Chromium is good at. It's enabled in both systems, but on a RAM Disk in Windows to save SSD writes.

your right it was due to the cpu spike, memory is at 16% idle an holding at that without opening any other processes on this new startup, the process for Whisker Menu? not to sure but these are the top 3 that spike up when i open the menu, im also using a VirtualBox to test it which adds some processes to Linux mint, Linux mint 15 already had the support for Virtual Box, i didn't need to install any guest additions everything works for me out of the box.

Unless your still using dial-up, or a 1.5mbps slow connection it is useless! I never figured out how to disable cache in chrome I think Chromium only has this option, "Disable cache (while DevTools is open)" But it doesn't stop the cache unless your using devtools so I gave up on chrome really quick, wanted to use it on usb for a portable browser but didn't like the cache constantly writing to my usb.

Hmm, well why change what's already working? I'll hold off this experiment until the next LTS.

Mine isn't slow, but that isn't the case all the time, especially with other users. Then there's limited plans, particularly tethering. Just don't see the performance benefit either way, nor is HDD space a worry. So let's end it at that.
