    haven't tried MATE yet.

have you tried both Cinnamon and MATE?
if so, would you mind sharing your likes and dislikes about both of them?

only think that concerns me with MATE is that it is based on GNOME 2 technology and that's bound to be deprecated later or sooner...

well yeah, it's pretty damn good!:p

I prefer Cinnamon myself... MATE is ok, but my understanding was that MATE was more or less a dead end. I stick with Cinnamon and if I feel minimalistic, Xfce....

I think its just a matter of personal preference... i like to have the classic "Applications", "Places", "System" menu (instead of a big "all in one" menu) and combine that with Cairo Dock (specifically with some awesome folder shortcuts add-ons). Besides that i also like to use Compiz (that doesn´t work with Cinnamon). I also found MATE easily configurable and light. I'm very satisfied :)

tnx for the feedback Alex! :)

anyway, i just reformatted all my drives to ext4 and decided to use Linux only from now on.

i had problem with the NVIDIA drivers this morning, so i decided to restore an image from after the install, re-installed the NVIDIA drivers and it seems to work good this time.
    ----
    meh! :gack:
looks like i spoke too fast, once again. lol

NVIDIA drivers acting up on Cinnamon, so back to Xubuntu.

it's stable as a rock on my 64 bits machine.
    with NVIDIA drivers too.
and bloody fast as well. :thumb:

looking forward to test what Mint XFCE is gonna be like though.
it should be out fairly soon now...

Linux Mint 15 Olivia on Nvidia-ed laptop - Perfection?

Here we go. Here's an enthusiastic review of Linux Mint 15 Olivia tested on an HP laptop with Nvidia graphics and Broadcom Wireless, covering live session, dual-boot configuration side by side with Windows 7, and post install use and tweaks, including look & feel, functionality out of the box, extra software like Skype, Steam and KVM, Nvidia & Broadcom drivers setup using Drivers Manager, resource usage, responsiveness, stability, suspend & resume, other details, and more. Is this the bestest Linux distro ever?

Did you use 32 or 64 bit Mint?

I tried the apt-get way from 14 MATE, because I'm not willing to redo all of my configuration every 6 months or so. Worked, but the minor bugs irked me enough to downgrade to 13 LTS XFCE.

Application Finder is enough without mintMenu after some tweaking, so I'm sticking with this setup. Netbook running smoother.

got the same shutdown problem with Mint 15 Cinnamon.

    curiously, Xubuntu 13.04 works flawlessly.
this is the kernel i am using on Xubuntu 13.04: 3.8.0-25-generic

could someone check which kernel Linux Mint 15 is running?
    ----
disk space usage should be no more than 5 to 8 GB, on par with other distros

And so does Kubuntu 13.04. No problems at all.

tnx for the feedback m8! :thumb:

so it would seem if people have problems maybe they should try the 3.8.0-25 kernel...

Thanks, I'm quite new to Linux and Mint, I used LiLi USB Creator, but it didn't offer the 64 bit version and when I downloaded it myself it didn't recognize it properly...
    Nice review btw :)

LiLi USB creator applied the install parameters from 32 bit MATE edition(I used 64 bit Cinnamon edition) but it seems it is working flawlessly :)

often in those USB creators you can select "Other ISOs" and select something that's not on the list.

Thanks, though LiLi doesn't seem to have that option, you can automatically download a distribution from a long list(very long, though no 64 bit Mint) or you can feed it an ISO/physical media, if you do that it says it's not on the compatibility list and install parameters from Mint MATE will be used and no other options after that.
