If you call yourself a custom ROM veteran, you definitely have heard about LineageOS. LineageOS traces its roots back to CyanogenMod, the custom ROM that became popular on the HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1, the first Android smartphone available for purchase.

With the 17.1 branch reaching feature and stability-parity with 16.0, it will become the most recent and most actively developed branch, with regular nightly builds for supported devices commencing from January 31, 2020.
The LineageOS Wiki was recently extended and device maintainers were given significantly more options to customize their device’s individual installation, update, and upgrade instructions.

Lineage: Hello, LineageOS 17.1

We have been working extremely hard since Android 10’s release last August to port our features to this new version of Android. Thanks to massive refactoring done in some parts of AOSP, we had to work harder than anticipated to bring some features forward, and in some cases, introduced implementations similar to some of our features into AOSP (but we’ll get to that later).

LineageOS 17.1 is the latest release of the popular custom ROM, based on Android 10. The LineageOS project was already providing daily builds for over 60 phones and tablets, but in the time since we last covered the ROM, a handful of additional phones have been granted official support.

Quite a few phones have been updated from LineageOS 16 Pie to LineageOS 17.1, including the LeEco Le Pro3/Pro3 Elite (zl1), Essential Phone PH-1 (mata), Motorola Moto X 2014 (victara), and Wileyfox Swift (crackling). It's pretty wild that a six year-old phone has received Android 10, even in an unofficial capacity.
The only completely new addition is the OnePlus 7 (guacamoleb), which is now receiving nightly LineageOS 17.1 builds.

For several years, it had been the means to revitalize old phones, and LineageOS continues to serve longtime Android users in the same way. LineageOS 17.1 is the latest version of the Android 10-based custom OS that was announced earlier this year with improvements over LineageOS 17.
LineageOS 17.1 has now been ported to some old devices including the veteran flagship killer — OnePlus One — along with the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact from 2018, and last year’s F(x)tec Pro1.

To help fans of the phone squeeze a few more years of life out of their device, the team behind LineageOS are adding support for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, with the Pixel 3a and Pixel 4 series not far behind.

This evening, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were added to the list of supported devices on the official LineageOS website, each listed as having support for LineageOS version 16, which is based on Android Pie. As spotted by yagyaxt1068 on the official LineageOS subreddit, though, we can also see that the developer who is taking responsibility for the Pixel 2 series is preparing to give the devices support for the Android 10 based LineageOS 17.1.

In the same Reddit post, we learn that another developer has decided to tackle LineageOS 17.1 support for the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL, making LineageOS officially compatible with every Pixel device except the Pixel 4a.

LineageOS 17.1, based on Android 10, arrived on the original Pixel and Pixel XL earlier this year. After a handful of builds were released based on Android 9 Pie, the Pixel 2 (walleye) and Pixel 2 XL (taimen) are now also supported on LineageOS 17.1. The Pixel 3 (blueline), Pixel 3 XL (crosshatch), Pixel 4 (flame), Pixel 4 XL (coral), and Pixel 3a (sargo) have also been added to the official roster over the past few days.

That leaves the Pixel 3a XL and Pixel 4a as the only remaining devices that don't have official Lineage support. There's already a wiki page for the 3a XL, and it has been added to the list of build targets, but downloads are not live yet.

On an unrelated note, the G7 Play (channel) and G7 Power (ocean) have also been added to the list of LineageOS 17.1 devices. It's always nice to see more budget devices on the roster.

Setting up a new Android phone has become really simple over the years if you are making a switch between phones from the same OEM. If you are migrating between phone makers, the process becomes a little jittery. The built-in backup feature – based on Google Play Services framework – allows you to save and restore data and apps but it’s not 100-percent full proof.

Reportedly LineageOS is overcoming the root-only tool crisis and offering SeedVault as backup and restore tool in the software.
SeedVault is an open-source backup application that comprises same APIs as the ABD backup. Most importantly, the app doesn’t require root access, and it’s easy to use. It allows the user to select back-up location of choice be it the USB drive or some self-hosted cloud system.

What makes SeedVault very reliable is also its security feature. The backup through the app is fully encrypted and can be unlocked using randomly generated 12-word key. SeedVault – free app for Android – was recently tinkered with by a Twitter user, who shared a video of the smooth app navigation and functioning on his handle.
