I have an older-5 years old-Emachines desktop with Windows XP, AMD 64 processor, 200 GB HD and 1024 memory. I am looking for the lightest Antivirus, preferably free, that can be used for this...Any ideas? Thanks

One of my other systems is basically the same eMachines model and it is running avast 7 really well. The lightest AV I've tried on it.

I'm running Avast 7 with WSA on a netbook XP SP3 (Acer Aspire D260-A) no slowdowns whatsoever :)

Try F-Prot, once was light. But I don't know if his detection is high.

Lightest free AV's I have used are Avast 7 and Forticlient Lite.

To give you an idea: Avast7 uses 25% of the disk I/O of Panda (after you have done a first scan).

The AV component of Returnil is also very low on resources (but scores less in RAP http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/rap-index.xml )

Not all vendors consider adware.win32.relevantknowledge bad enough.
It's a toolbar, just remove it.
