LG teases a reveal of its dual-screen 'Wing' phone on September 14th
The first LG dual-screen phone will kick off its Explorer Project in two weeks

After months of leaks, it appears that we’ll finally meet the LG Wing on September 14th.

As shown in this teaser video (above) released tonight, its next device will extend the display, with a screen rotating into view. Back in May the rumors talked about a T-Shaped device with the horizontal extension at the top, while a video leak last week showed how it works in action and rotating things by 90 degrees.

The teaser doesn’t clearly show the Wing in action, but LG announced Rave, Ficto, Tubi and Naver as partners in the project, with the hardware powered by Qualcomm’s chips.
Tubi is a name we know for free ad-supported video streaming, while South Korean search giant (and owner of the Line messaging app) Naver is apparently working on a customized dual-screen web browser.

LG has confirmed its upcoming phone will be called Wing (the Wing?) and will be revealed at its announcement event on September 14th. The device is believed to have two screens in a swiveling form factor, with a recent teaser video showing what looks like a sliding mechanism that can rotate into a T shape.

In addition to its swiveling screens, reports about the Wing so far have indicated the device will support 5G, have a triple-rear camera array with a 64-megapixel main sensor, and will run on a Snapdragon 7-series processor.

The device will be LG’s first launched under its Explorer Project, a new mobile category the company says is aimed at “discovering new ways to interact with mobile devices... and challenging established user norms,” adding that the Wing will “deliver a new and different form factor and mobile experience that would be impossible to create with conventional smartphones.”

LG’s announcement event kicks off at 10AM ET on September 14th.

You’ve seen the LG Wing’s clever rotating display in use with apps and games, but what will the interface be like? If a new leak is accurate, you might have an idea.

A Korean video (via Twitter user Fold Universe) appears to show the Wing home screen and notifications shade. As you might imagine, LG would make use of the unusual design even in a seemingly pedestrian situation like this. You could pivot the display to get an extra-large (if stretched) version of your quick controls and alerts while keeping part of your home page visible below.

Many details of the Wing remain mysterious, although it could have the performance of an upper mid-range phone with a Snapdragon 765G chip and 5G wireless. It might be as expensive as a high-end device with a price nearer to $1,000 in the US, though, so you could be paying a premium for that additional screen.

LG has, throughout its long history, jumped onto some very unusual bandwagons.
And now, with foldable screens on the rise and dual-display phones making a comeback, LG is trying to turn heads once more with the new Wing 5G.

It's about the strangest dual-screen phone we've seen yet, and with a (not yet firm) price of around $1,000, it’s also among the cheapest. Maybe more than anything, though, it’s proof that, yes, Weird LG is back.
Rather than unfolding the Wing as you would with a Galaxy Z Fold 2 or a Surface Duo, you instead flick the main screen around so it sits in landscape orientation.

The Wing's strange, secondary ultra-wide camera might be the best example of this both-screens-at-once approach. Once the phone is open and you fire up the camera, the Wing can become an all-in-one camera/gimbal combo, complete with an on-screen joystick for tilt shots and planning.

Maybe the most important thing about the Explorer initiative is that it won't live or die based on the Wing's sales. LG says it will remain committed to the project even if the Wing winds up being a total market dud, which -- let's face it -- is a distinct possibility.
No one can say for sure right now, but if LG really does stick to its word and pushes the industry in new and interesting directions, well, that's a win for all of us.

LG recently launched the LG Wing dual screen smartphone with a unique design that swivels the display 90-degrees to reveal a second display. The phone is definitely one of a kind and popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything got a chance to peek under its hood to see how the phone works.

In the teardown video, Zac noted some of the unique and wild design decisions that led to LG Wing.
The phone has a hole in the PCB to pass a cable to power the front display and has a tiny hydraulic damper to absorb the shock from moving the display. The phone also has a curved track and two springs to make the whole swiveling contraption work.

The video shows other interesting aspects of the device and also the downside of have such a design including an absense of an official IP rating.

I just saw jerry rigs teardown of the phone, though it is quite unique and very innovative I'm still quite skeptical of its durability in the long run since it has moving parts.

The 'weirdest phone of 2020' is finally making its way to U.S. shores, with Verizon being the first carrier to stock the phone. It'll start accepting pre-orders for the phone starting October 1, with general availability following soon after on October 15.

The phone will run you $999.99 outright, though the carrier also has a few promos running to bring that down to a more palatable number. Despite that eye-watering price, though, the phone's specs are decidedly mid-range with a Snapdragon 765G paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It's also got four cameras, with a 32MP pop-up selfie camera, alongside a triple-camera array sporting a 64MP primary sensor, 12MP ultra-wide "Big Pixel" lens, and a 13MP ultra-wide lens round back.

When it comes to offering more screen real estate on a smartphone, manufacturers have two options: either go with a flexible display à la Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, or attach a secondary screen like the LG Velvet. [...] common problem: multi-tasking only works well when both apps are in portrait orientation, due to the design of most apps.

If I watch YouTube and Netflix videos in landscape, but then load Twitter or Facebook on the bottom half of the phone, these would be stretched wide, making it difficult to read text or view images.
This is where the LG Wing 5G’s bizarre swivel-screen design comes in, and having used a pre-production unit for about a week (and having used both the Velvet and the Galaxy Fold), this is by far my favorite multi-screen phone yet.

For me, the Wing is fine as it is in terms of dual-screen usability, though it’d be nice to have a slightly taller second screen if LG ever plans on making a Wing 2. And maybe it could shed a few grams as well.
For now, the Wing sits comfortably between conventional smartphones and foldable dual-screen phones, allowing practical dual-screen use cases while keeping its size and weight to a new minimum in this class.

LG's spectacular swiveling phone Wing is picking up a major software update. Rolling out for the Verizon unit, the update brings some much-needed improvements to the dual-screen experience.

According to the official changelog, the new update makes it much easier to switch apps between the two screens. A mere tap on the "Fetch" or "Send" button on the quick settings on the second screen will move apps from one display to the other. LG had high hopes from the Wing phone to revive its reputation as a smartphone maker. However, this swiveling phone has been suffering from poor sales since its launch.
According to Korean media, the company has only sold about 50,000 units of the LG Wing to date in its home country South Korea.

That's only about 25-percent of LG's initial domestic sales projection of two million units by the end of this year.
Global sales have been equally poor as well.

The company is now looking to address some of those issues and make multitasking on this phone a lot easier. Hopefully, it isn't too late for LG.
