LG’s smartphone business struggled in 2019, so the company is hoping to turn things around this year with an “offensive pricing policy” for “mass-premium and mass-tier 5G products.”

Instead, it’s believed that the new “LG Velvet,” the first smartphone in the Velvet line that’s expected to replace the LG G line, will be the standard-bearer for LG’s revitalized smartphone business.

The last few images show Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 logo in the bottom left-hand corner, indicating that the LG Velvet will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest upper mid-range processor. Unlike the flagship Snapdragon 865, the Snapdragon 765 has not been featured in that many different smartphone models, so it should be interesting to see a mass-market phone with this processor.

Earlier rumors suggest the LG Velvet will have a 48MP main camera, a 4,000mAh battery, and support LG’s Dual Screen attachment. The screen size will supposedly be between 6.7 to 6.9-inches diagonally, making this a rather large smartphone. We also expect this phone to support 5G network connectivity given Snapdragon 765’s integrated Snapdragon X52 modem is 5G-capable.

LG has released a short teaser trailer for its upcoming Velvet smartphone that gives us a clearer look at its design, which is a refreshing change from LG’s recent devices like the V60. The trailer also confirms it will run on a Snapdragon 5G 765 processor, which is a step down from Qualcomm’s current flagship, the Snapdragon 865.

The company has already announced key details about the Velvet’s design over the past fortnight, but the new trailer gives us a better idea of how it’ll look in the real-world. There’s a cascading triple-camera array on the rear arranged into what LG is calling a “raindrop” design, and although the main camera is still raised from the back of the device, it’s very different from the large camera-bumps that are becoming increasingly common.

There’s still no official word on when LG plans to announce the Velvet, but previously a report from Korean news portal Naver suggested it could be revealed on May 15th. Considering the amount of teasers LG has released this month, a full launch can’t be too far away.

The company’s latest tease though is perhaps the most important yet, as it tells us when the LG Velvet will be fully unveiled.
May 7 is the date, as revealed in a video posted on LG’s official YouTube channel, which you can see below.

We know from previous leaks that the LG Velvet will have a triple-lens rear camera, a teardrop notch, and an upper mid-range Snapdragon 765 chipset, so if this is a replacement for the LG G9 it might be slightly lower end than we’d have expected that phone to be.

Last month, we learned that LG might bid farewell to the flagship LG G series and could introduce a mid-range smartphone under a new branding. LG later confirmed its plan to replace the G series with a new brand and gave us our first look at the LG Velvet, the first phone in the Velvet lineup.
This was followed by a teaser video that showcased the phone in its entirety and gave us a closer look at the design language. LG isn’t stopping here as it has now gone ahead and confirmed some of the key specifications of the LG Velvet.

According to LG Korea, the LG Velvet will feature a 6.8-inch curved display with a 20.5:9 aspect ratio and centered U-shaped notch. It’s unclear whether it will be an LCD or AMOLED and we also don’t know if it will support a high refresh rate. As rumored and later confirmed by LG in the teaser, the phone will indeed be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 756 SoC.
Lastly, the LG Velvet will feature a 4,300 mAh battery and will support 10W wireless charging — as confirmed by a listing on the Wireless Power Consortium.

We don’t know when LG plans to bring the phone to other markets but we expect to learn more about this in the coming weeks.

After several weeks of releasing bits of information about its new-generation smartphone, LG today officially unveiled the Velvet in South Korea. The device is priced at around ₩899,800 or around $700 (via Engadget).

As the company confirmed last month, the LG Velvet is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765 SoC. Also, onboard the device is 8GB of RAM paired with 128GB of internal storage that's expandable via a microSD card slot.
On the back, it rocks a triple camera setup with a raindrop style arrangement, compromising a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor.

Inside, it packs a 4,300mAh battery with support for both fast and wireless charging. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack and runs Android 10 with LG's user interface on top. The phone is also expected to roll out in other territories in the near future, but the South Korean electronics giant has yet to confirm a release date and global pricing.

LG's new Velvet smartphone launched in Korea last month, introducing an all-new design language for the company, featuring a "raindrop" camera module on the back and some interesting color options. Today, LG announced that the LG Velvet is coming to other markets around the world this month, releasing gradually in more countries over the coming weeks.

For its internals, LG went with a mid-range Snapdragon 765 5G from Qualcomm, ditching the high-end Snapdragon 865, and paired it with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via microSD. The battery is sizeable, at 4,300mAh, and considering it's using a lower-power chipset compared to most flagships, it should last quite a bit.

It's still unclear how much the phone will cost in global markets, but the Korean price of ₩899,800 is roughly equivalent to $740 at current exchange rates. It will be available in European markets including Spain, Italy, and Germany first, with more countries around the world - including in North America - getting it over the following weeks.

The LG Velvet, a polished, midrange 5G phone that first launched in South Korea, is coming to the US on AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. The new device, which will be priced starting at $599, will hit AT&T first and be available online at the carrier starting on July 22 before arriving in stores on Aug. 7.
Verizon and T-Mobile customers will be able to nab LG's latest as well, though neither carrier has yet announced pricing or availability information. LG says it will hit both "later this summer."

T-Mobile USA gets LG Velvet 5G exclusive

This week the folks at T-Mobile USA announced they’d be selling an exclusive iteration of the LG Velvet. They’ll have the only LG Velvet “on the first 5G chipset from MediaTek.” Whether that’ll make a big difference to consumers looking for low-price, high-value Android smartphones from T-Mobile is yet to be seen.

The LG Velvet 5G will be released with T-Mobile USA this year with both T-Mobile LTE and 5G spectrum. This means it’ll have both 600MHz and 2.5Ghz connectivity with T-Mobile USA. This version of the phone will also – of course – have connectivity such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC.
This device will be available for half its normal price with T-Mobile USA if customers add a line or bring in a qualified trade-in smartphone.

The LG Velvet 5G with T-Mobile USA will be available in Aurora Gray and “Pink White.” The device will be released on September 10, 2020, for a full retail price of $588. T-Mobile USA also has the LG Velvet 5G available on a monthly price plan of $24.50 a month over 24 months with $0 down for “well-qualified customers on T-Mobile’s no-interest equipment installment plan.”
