TCL is working on a new phone with a slide-out display, leaked images published by CNET suggest. Unlike devices that fold in half like the Motorola Razr or Samsung Galaxy Fold, the images show a phone that seems to work like an extendable dining table, with a second display that slides out from underneath the first.

The images paint a compelling picture of what the device could be, but they raise more questions than they answer. For starters, when the device is expanded the screen seems to stretch continuously from one edge to the other, which begs the question of where it goes when the device is unexpanded?
The design also suggests that half of the phone will be left empty when the device is expanded, since it has to be able to fit while the device is in its more compact mode

TCL has shown off its prototype foldable devices at a couple of different shows, but it’s yet to announce a consumer-ready product.

TCL announces world’s first rollable display smartphone concept

TCL claims that this is the world’s first rollable extendable smartphone concept. Unlike the existing foldable displays that increases the screen real estate using hinges, this TCL concept uses rollable display.

After you press a button, you can basically pull the smartphone display to extend it. In regular mode, this device has a 6.75-inch AMOLED display. After you extend the display, it will become a 7.8-inch display.
Despite having the rollable display mechanism, this device is just 9mm thick making it more practical for everyday usage. TCL claims that this device will have no wrinkles or creases like the current generation folding devices because of a larger axis and rolled display.

As you expect, there is no word on pricing and availability of this concept device.

As you can see if you flip through the gallery above, this TCL foldable phone concept is unlike anything we've seen before.

However, a gentle tug on the right side of the handset and the device slides out, bringing the screen with it. As you pull, the screen extends, rolling out of the frame of the device as it goes - though the end design might extend automatically.
It's a design which makes a lot of sense in terms of practicality, allowing you to easily switch between the smaller and larger display sizes without have to bend, twist or fold the handset.

As there's no hinge or central 'fold' (the excess screen curves around the perimeter of the handset, inside the frame), this particular form factor shouldn't suffer from the display crease we've seen on all foldable phones to date.

There are some question marks over this design, however. First up, there's no word on when we may see this form factor hit the market - if ever - and then there's the question of durability.
We'd worry about the screen getting snagged as it rolled in/out, or the extending part of the handset being easily broken as it's unlikely to have the same structural integrity as a standard phone.

TCL first discussed flexible smartphone screens which rolled up earlier this year, and today a video surfaced showing the concept being developed in their labs.

The short video shows a 4.5 smartphone which can expand to 6.7 inches without compromising device thickness.
TCL is developing the technology based on OLED screens printed by an inkjet printer on a flexible substrate, and says the technology can currently withstand being furled and unfurled 200,000 times.

At IFA TCL said they do not expect to bring devices using the screens to market this year, but DisplaySearch’s Ross Young says there is a race to get these devices to market, suggesting we may not have to wait too long.
