As we try to make sense of Google’s 2020 Pixel lineup, an internal Android document reviewed by 9to5Google gives us our first glimpse of what to expect next year. According to the document, Google is developing Android builds for Pixel 5a, a foldable Pixel, and at least two other first-party devices.

The document lists builds of Google’s mobile operating system for all publicly-launched Pixels since Pixel 2, including Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, the as-yet unannounced Google Pixel 5a (seemingly codenamed barbette), and three other in-development devices with codenames “raven,” “oriole,” and “passport.”

It’s possible that “raven” and “oriole” could be “Pixel 6” models (the document doesn’t specify), but the third device, “passport” is explicitly referred to as being a “foldable.” All three are labeled as “Q4 2021,” which could be an early indication that a Pixel foldable smartphone is advancing toward becoming a retail product.

In 2019, CNET reported that Google was “working on a foldable Pixel,” but Pixel head at the time Mario Queiroz only explicitly confirmed that the company was “prototyping the technology,” adding at the time that Google had been doing that “for a long time”.

Although we’re months away from the supposed Pixel 5 release date, we already know quite a bit about the device. We have only a few tidbits to go on for now, but we know enough to start building a picture of what to expect.
We can also assume a lot about various features of the devices based on the history of the Pixel line. Certain things will always be predictable.

As far as the Pixel 5 release date goes, it’s possible we could see the launch on October 8, 2020. We learned this date from a French version of Google’s reveal of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G, which erroneously included a pre-order date. Google eventually removed this information, which leads us to believe that could be the date of the launch event.
Even if that date isn’t correct, an October launch is a safe bet.

Multiple Google Pixel 5 leaks suggest the phone will sport a more mid-range processor. As of right now, our best guess is that the Snapdragon 765, 765G, or 768G might be what powers the Pixel 5 lineup.

Google announced the Pixel 4a earlier this month and teased the impending launch of two more Pixel phones -- the Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 5G -- for later this year. The company's announcement was short on other details though. Today, leaker Jon Prosser, who had previously accurately leaked the delayed launch of the Pixel 4a, claims that Google will announce the Pixel 5 5G and Pixel 4a on September 30th.

The leaker sees "in the system" that the Pixel 5 5G in black and green colors and the Pixel 4a (5G) in black are coming on September 30, with the Pixel 4a (5G) in white releasing in October. Google France had previously erroneously leaked the pre-order date of the Pixel 4a (5G) and the Pixel 5 as October 8.

Once the new Pixels are launched, they will be available in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia.

Today’s the day of Pixel 5 leaks, apparently. Following some leaked renders earlier today, the folks over at Android Central have published a partial spec list for the Pixel 5.

According to this latest report, Pixel 5 will offer up a 6-inch display, a middle ground between the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL from last year. That display will apparently offer a 90Hz refresh rate and use an OLED panel, but the resolution isn’t detailed here. The Pixel 4a 5G, on the other hand, will be the company’s biggest phone this year with a 6.2-inch display.
As for the cameras, there are two. A standard shooter backed up by an ultra-wide instead of telephoto.

In other specs, the Pixel 5 will apparently have the Snapdragon 765G as has been expected for some time. Backing that up would be 8GB of RAM, a considerable upgrade from Pixel 4, and 128GB of storage, as another leak earlier today mentioned.

Obviously, this list leaves a lot still up to the imagination, but it’s great to finally have some idea of what to expect from Pixel 5. With October just around the corner and it certainly looking like Pixel 5 will arrive then, there’s still plenty of time for more details to arrive.

Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 w/ 4,000 mAh battery leak in live image with alleged specs

Following two other reports earlier this week, a live image of both phones have emerged, along with an alleged Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 specs leak.

At the start of August, Google only offered a side profile of the two upcoming phones that round out its 2020 lineup. A Redditor this evening has posted a picture of the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5.
Note: Shortly after posting, the leaker deleted the image, screenshots, and specs information.

Appearing side-by-side, the Pixel 5 on the left is slightly smaller and has a very textured rear. This leak claims it is a “plastic back” with matte finish, but that could just be the coating. We also see a square camera bump that is near identical to the Pixel 4, but the flash is now at the top. There’s also a fingerprint sensor.

Digesting that Pixel 5 specs leak, the Snapdragon 765G has been rumored for months, while 8GB of RAM is an unexpected and welcome increase. The lack of an audio jack is unsurprising for a “premium” phone.
This leak did not reveal the screen size for the Pixel 4a (5G) or Pixel 5, but both have hole-punch displays like the Pixel 4a (as seen in the screenshots above).

As much as six new Google handsets have passed through the FCC certification site and from what we understand by looking that their model number, three smartphones are basically different variants of the upcoming Pixel 4a 5G and the other three are the Pixel 5 5G variants. The FCC listing also suggests that Google is quite close to releasing both the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5.

Smartphones with model number G025E, G025I, and G025H are likely to be the three different variants of the Pixel 4a 5G as the LTE variant of the smartphone has model number G025J. GD1YQ, GTT9Q, and G5NZ6 could be the other three variants of the Pixel 5 smartphone as the trio have been tested for the wireless charging, something that Pixel 5 will have support for.

A new Chromecast is on the way, too, and an update to Google’s smart speakers.
Two new mysterious Google hardware devices appeared at the FCC last month, looking like they’re related to a new Android TV product that Google has reportedly been preparing for a while. Google is rumored to be working on a TV dongle codenamed “Sabrina” that would use Android TV and a traditional remote-driven UI.

Following Chromecast with Google TV and Nest Audio last week, official Pixel 5 renders have now leaked ahead of the September 30 event.

Many device specifications have previously already leaked, but WinFuture today provides additional confirmation and fills out other details. For example, the 6-inch 90Hz display has a 432PPI with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and is protected by Gorilla Glass 6, which is a one-generation upgrade from the Pixel 4. This renders leak also shows how the Pixel 5 has a pretty narrow bottom bezel.
There is a 4,080mAh battery that supports wireless charging with a reverse-power capability for accessories.

Meanwhile, the second 16MP wide-angle camera has a 107-degree FOV with ƒ/2.2 at 1.0 μm. There’s the same 12.2MP main camera as before, but it now supports 4K 60FPS and 1080p 240FPS video recording.
We get additional confirmation that the Pixel 5 is powered by the Snapdragon 765G with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, but WinFuture only cites Sub-6 5G radios.

XDA developers scored the first pictures of the device, which will finally bring a dongle-style device to Android TV. The operating system is also apparently getting a facelift, with leaked video showing the home screen breaking down the walls that exist between services and mixing together content from multiple services.

Who wouldn’t want one of the best camera phones around for cheaper than ever before?

On its own, the Google Pixel 5 may have stood out enough to pique fan interest. However, big G is also planning to release the Google Pixel 4a 5G at the same time with a cheaper price point, starting at just $499/€499.
Whether consumers will judge those perks to be worth an extra $120 or so is far from certain. I’m starting to think they won’t.

At face value, a $629/€629 Google Pixel 5 price tag is perhaps a tad on the expensive side compared to its competitors. Nevertheless, it’s a price some would certainly pay for one of the best camera packages around. However, with the Pixel 4a 5G coming in at $499/€499, Google may end up undercutting its own flagship product

Even with modest internals and one configuration available, the Pixel 5 pre-orders are now completely “out of stock” on the Google Store in the UK, Ireland, and Germany ahead of an October 15 launch.

It’s important to note that while the Pixel 5 is set to ship from next week in Europe — and some other regions — the US will have to wait a couple extra weeks before those who pre-ordered will be blessed with their purchases. Conversely, the US is set to get access to the Pixel 4a 5G ahead of vast portions of the rest of the world, with waitlists still being open.

here is a lot about the Pixel 5 construction that is pretty different. The first is the screen retention technique, which uses both glue and rectangular clips. You'll need to both heat the phone up and pry out all the little tabs—hopefully without breaking them—in order to get at the inside of the phone.
Whatever Google's plan was for holding the screen on, it doesn't seem to be working very well, as there are already reports of uneven gaps forming between the phone's frame and display.

Google says Pixel 5 screen and body gap is ‘normal part of the design’

As customers started receiving the Pixel 5 in mid-October, some noticed a small gap between the display and frame. Google has investigated the issue and says this is a “normal part of the design” that will not impact water resistance.

A “Community Specialist” this afternoon said that Google investigated affected units and looked at “quality control data from the factory.”

…we can confirm that the variation in the clearance between the body and the display is a normal part of the design of your Pixel 5.
One immediate concern that arose was the impact on the IP68 rating. The company says today that there is “no effect on the water and dust resistance or functionality of your phone.”

A teardown over the weekend revealed that the display — in addition to adhesive — is secured to the frame using five clips. As such, there are two layers of protection against the phone hypothetically falling apart.

Even with Google’s statement that there are no functional issues with Pixel 5 devices exhibiting gaps, it’s still strange that only some phones are affected. The intended design is presumably seamless, with the response suggesting that the company will work or be willing to exchange units.

Ever heard of a Pixel XE? Don't worry, we haven't either, which in addition to its unconfirmed source makes this leak very suspect. Still, Pixels have leaked full months before the release, before so it's possible that someone got a hold of an early engineering sample.

The live photos of the Pixel XE don't reveal much except that it has NFC and has two SIM card slots. If we can judge from the muddy close-up shots, the device will likely sport a display with rather thick side bezels and a centered punch hole for the front-facing camera. The rest is still a mystery.
In the meantime we'll be on the lookout for more proof confirming that it's indeed the XE or this whole thing is fabricated.

According to the journalist, Google has set aside August as its launch month for the Pixel 5a. This coincides with the launch of the Pixel 4a last year, which isn’t what the Pixel 5a resembles. However, the market may soon see a boom in popularity as a new report mentions that the Google Pixel foldable among several other devices will be using ultra-thin glass.
The Elec reports this week that Samsung’s ultra-thin glass is finally going to be widely used in the second half of this year. Outside of Samsung’s own devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, at least five devices are reportedly set to use the screen technology.

Most notable in this lineup is the Google Pixel foldable, which we first reported on almost a year ago. This report doesn’t offer any further details, but mentions that the device will use ultra-thin glass over its 7.6-inch internal display, a detail that’s been previously reported. This mention alone is a good sign that Google is still on track to launch the device this year.

Ultra-thin glass isn’t exactly a durability miracle for foldables, as we mentioned in our review of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, it does provide for a much more pleasent experience for the user. In effect, ultra-thin glass is helping these devices come to market and properly compete with Samsung.

This might change with the upcoming Pixel 6 XL (it might also be called the Pixel 6 Pro). According to XDA-Developers, the latest Google Camera app update contains references to an "ultratele" zoom variant, as well as "5x" zoom. Further digging through the Camera app code revealed that the actual optical zoom level of the camera may be 4.3x, which implies that Google might use a periscope lens for its telephoto camera.

After the Pixel 5a, Google is expected to launch the Pixel 6 series. The lineup will consist of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro aka Pixel 6 XL. The phones will run on Google Tensor– the tech giant’s very own mobile platform. So much has been said about the Pixel 6 series and we know more will be revealed until the big launch. The Google Pixel 6 XL may feature a 5X ultra tele camera.

The Pixel 6 Pro is said to be “expensive” while the Pixel 6 will be part of the “upper segment”. Google’s SVP of Devices and Services Rick Osterloh shared those descriptions in an interview.
The Pixel 6 series will feature better photosensors and high refresh rate screens. The prices could be $999 and $1,099 to $1,199 for the regular Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro, respectively.

More evidence has surfaced that the Google Pixel 5a might be right around the corner.
Android Police has obtained what it says are repair shop photos (pictured below) of Pixel 5a parts that appear to confirm rumors swirling around the budget phone, including its release date. The device really would be a spruced-up Pixel 4a 5G (above), according to the leak. You'd get a similar dual rear camera setup and size, just with a much larger 4,680mAh battery (up from 3,800mAh) and a grippier plastic shell.

The scoop also supports talk of a headphone jack. The mainboard and other components are missing, although Google is expected to rely on a Snapdragon (possibly the 765G from the Pixel 4a 5G) rather than a variant of the custom Tensor chip coming to the Pixel 6.

The source claims Google will unveil the Pixel 5a on August 17th. Past rumors have suggested the 5a might reach stores on August 26th at a $450 price, $50 lower than the Pixel 4a 5G but well above the $350 of the base 4a.

Google today officially announced the Pixel 5a, a device that the company confirmed the existence of earlier this year. Unlike the Pixel 4a lineup that was offered in LTE and 5G variants, the Pixel 5a will come with 5G support as standard. As for the device itself, it is a mild upgrade over the Pixel 4a 5G, but there are a few noteworthy improvements.

The first of the significant additions made to the device comes in the way of an IP67 rating, the first A-series phone to be certified for water and dust resistance. The other improvement, which is a welcome one, is a larger battery.
