The best of both worlds. A very good signature database and NOD's great Advance Heuristic detection.

Well there is also another thing in NOD32...
Those a variant of... are derivates of signatures,so more signatures they have, more similar malware (modified) can be detected. Of course not 100% of it,but there is probably a greater chance to detect it.
So signatures still play a big role...

but where did this big update come from? just over 3800 signatures must take a while to put together. thats my only question - WHERE DID THIS BIG UPDATE COME FROM?

Yup, me too. but WHY one big update and not continuous updates over time? 3800+ signatures must take a while to put together, so why have they just appeared in one big update. and apparently another big update is on its way. they LOOK good, but why have eset been sitting on them till now?

Maybe Eset has expanded their reach over the world recently and its adding lots of sample due to better manpower :doubt:

Remember, even others (e.g.BitDefender) did things like this sometime in the past (adding lots and lots of malware in huge updates). We could ask them the same question - why were you sitting on these samples till now?

    :D:)

I think one reasons why some companies do that is e.g. the following:
Every update has to checked before release (e.g. to see if it delivers false positives etc.). Checking a big update intensivly is probably faster and more efficient then doing it on smaller updates (as there would not be enough time to check them against the whole set of clean files). As those updates are not a first priority they can be done by releasing them in big parts. At least I know that some other companies do it for such reasons.
it is interesting that finally eset followed the wishes of its customers to improve their detection rates and signatures for trojans and backdoors (and hired more personal) and some people are not happy with that. i would wish also some other companies (most do, but some seems not) would also work more on the samples they have and do not detect...
i would say: better late then never :p

Well as long as NOD continues to have it's impressive speed and low resource use, I'll keep using it.
It's a joy to scan your entire computer in less than 10 minutes :D

Why should AV companies buy something they get for free? AV companies get samples from customers, AV companies share together the samples they get (+/-), and they get the missed samples after the tests of various test centers.

P.S.: the short answer is: NO!

NOD32 is becoming a serious threat to all big names (Kaspersky,Symantec and McAfee). Can't wait to see new comparatives test results :D
