Apple is planning on releasing an iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of 2020 and starting at a $399 price point, according to the latest research report from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo goes into more detail about the expected specs of the so called "‌iPhone SE 2‌" in the latest research note obtained by MacRumors.
Kuo expects the new ‌iPhone SE 2‌ will be a popular upgrade option for existing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S owners.

Despite being referred to as a "‌iPhone SE 2‌" by Kuo, the analyst expects the form factor of Apple's new budget iPhone to be similar to the iPhone 8.

It’s worth noting that the only specific evidence in the report is a claim that Chipbond Technology, which makes display driver chips for LCD screens, has received orders for two different LCD devices, so take this with a grain of salt.

If there really is a larger version of the iPhone SE 2, it’s said to have a 5.5-inch or 6.1-inch screen. The device is also supposed to arrive several months after the ‘standard’ version, possibly launching at the same time as the iPhone 12 lineup. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said, however, that an “iPhone SE 2 Plus” is being prepared for 2021, so we could be waiting longer for the larger model.

While the iPhone SE 2 and SE 2 Plus/Pro might seem like the names Apple would choose, the devices could be named the iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus/Pro. Cupertino jumped from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone X, so the 9 moniker hasn’t been taken.

Though we can’t confirm the exact date, the March timing seems about right. That’s the month Apple chose to announce the original iPhone SE, it means the device doesn’t get drowned out in WWDC announcements in June, and it leaves an ample gap until the iPhone 12 arrives.The phone will reportedly go on sale soon after the event, on April 3 (a Friday, as is typical for Apple). Earlier rumors indicated the device would retail for $399, placing it firmly in the midrange price category.

As with the original SE at the time, the device would basically match the company’s flagships for performance. Apple instead seems to plan to cut costs with a cheaper display and by recycling the iPhone 8’s chassis.

2020 iPhone SE
Based on the new information 9to5Mac has learned, Apple will simply call the new entry-level model “iPhone SE” while referencing the new hardware as the 2020 version.

We expect the new model to use the same chip as the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Plus: Apple’s A13 processor. That’s two generations up from the A11 Bionic chip inside the iPhone 8.
The new iPhone SE is expected to have the same design as the iPhone 8, although battery life should much improved with the removal of 3D Touch, a special feature on older iPhones.

Also new to the 2020 iPhone SE compared to the iPhone 8 that it replaces: Express Card and future CarKey support.
9to5Mac learned from a separate source earlier this week that retailers are preparing to start merchandising cases for the new iPhone starting Sunday. This doesn’t rule out an official announcement early next week.

In a previous note, Kuo said that Apple was working on an "‌iPhone‌ SE Plus" set to be released in the first half of 2021, but now he believes Apple will "likely postpone" this new model until later in 2021.

We predicted that Apple would launch the new ‌iPhone‌ model in 1H21 in a previous report ("‌iPhone‌ supply chain to be 2020 top pick in the tech sector; key predictions for new ‌iPhone‌ product mixes in 2020 and 2021" [December 5, 2019]). However, we think that Apple will likely postpone the new model from 1H21 to 2H21.

It's cool that they have added a cheaper iPhone, I think it will sell quite well. But I just don't like the iPhone design, sams goes for the Samsung Galaxy, I prefer Sony.

iFixit has published its full teardown of the new iPhone SE, confirming that the device has many similar or identical components as the iPhone 8, including the display, battery, cameras, Taptic Engine, SIM tray, and more.

The new iPhone SE appears to have the same 12-megapixel rear camera sensor as the iPhone 8, with the benefit of the A13 chip's improved image signal processor, as Rene Ritchie mentioned earlier this month. The device's front-facing 7-megapixel camera sensor also appears to be identical to the one in the iPhone 8.
While the new iPhone SE and the iPhone 8 have virtually identical display assemblies, Apple has removed the 3D Touch module from the iPhone SE.

But I can say that the 2020 version of the iPhone SE pushes its $400 price tag further than any mid-range Android phone, and in the last month, I've grown to appreciate its value even more — though coming from Android, it is an abusive relationship.

That said, it's not for everyone, and iOS is a very tough pill for some of our readers to swallow. I'm hardly an objective source on the matter (just check our site name and URL), but I do think Android beats iOS when it comes to functionality in many ways. Still, this is exceptional hardware you're getting for just $400, and not everyone is so picky about software.

If you can accept iOS, and the screen or battery life concerns don't bother you, this is a very good phone.

While Best Buy recently produced a screen protector for an "iPhone SE Plus," and while Ming-Chi Kuo has previously expected both that and a new iPhone SE, the analyst now says neither are coming soon. Kuo's latest investor note is specifically about supplier Yujingguang, better known as Genius Electronic Optical. He cautions that a belief that "the market overestimates revenue and gross margin" of the company.

"We believe that Genius Electronic Optical's October revenue [will turn out to be] lower than the market consensus because of increased competition," he continues. "We expect this competition to intensify in 2021."
