...as would be expected, since Windows Defender is part of Microsoft. ;)

Zemana Anti Malware is not on that list, shouldn't that count too ?
I have written to Zemana twice regarding their position on the registry key and MS updates and guess what ? - they haven't replied.

I hope this is going to be changed in future, because some people are disabling AV products, even built-in, but applying updates. I understand I can manually add some registry keys, but some are going to forget that in future installations of Windows.

    @Krusty
Personally, I hope they are going to release microcode for Sandy Bridge CPUs too. I understand CPU were released earlier (2011), but a lot of laptops were available in my country in H2 2012 and H1 2013 with those CPUs.

Are they a antivirus or supplemental layer of defense? I have them temporarily uninstalled.

    Hi Daman,
Thanks - ZAM supplements my Voodooshield - but Zemana is the only real time anti malware come AV product that I run.

    1. I hope that they sufficiently go back in time to patch those processors ....

    2. And then comes the other problem: the motherboard manufacturers ...
Often you need to get BIOS updates from those motherboard manufacturers. So the question is: will the motherboard manufacturers also give updates for mobo's they don't support any longer (even if not older than five years)?

I'm running a laptop with a Sandy Bridge processor and the laptop (ASUS ROG G74SX) is plenty fast for my needs. So, I'm also in favour of a patch, I just have serious doubts that both Intel with create one and that ASUS will then provide a BIOS update.

Does Zemana registers itself to the action center? If not, then my assumption is that it doesn't count as an AV.

Thanks, as Daman1 says ZAM doesn't register itself with the action centre, but I've had other supposedly 'dedicated' AV's in the past that don't register either.

I haven't heard from Zemana regarding the registry key issue, not even to say that it doesn't affect Zemana users (if that is the case), and which would be the courteous thing to do if applicable.

My license renewal is due in a few months and their product support so far doesn't fill me with joy, so I hope you are reading this Zemana as my money will be going elsewhere if you don't change your ways.

I think it's time for me to have a dedicated "banking" computer. A laptop with clean OS install that is only allowed to access 4 web sites and is turned off and put away after I'm done.

Definitely the way to install Speculation Control assembly. Wonder how many forgot to reset ExecutionPolicy back to "Default" or "Restricted" when doing this manually?

Will also add that you can't install/run Speculation Control if PowerShell is set to "Constained Language" mode. It has to be temporarily reset to "Full Language" mode.

Actually, the security experts have recommended this for some time. Other alternatives are booting into Linux from a CD or a bootable WIN PE CD, booting from a secure USB drive such as IronKey, etc..

I heard yesterday that Ubuntu will be releasing a update to patch this in the next couple of days.

At a slight tangent, FWIW I was repeatedly having these BSODs post KB4056892: Error: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M

I run EAM, not ZAM, but accidentally discovered a zamguard.sys driver was actively running even though I had installed ZAM. Removed that via autoruns, then registry key and file.

No more BSODs of that type so far.

As background, makes sense that this could have been the problem: https://support.emsisoft.com/topic/...ate-for-meltdown/?tab=comments#comment-180859

Edit: I have had this BSOD once more after removal of ZAM driver, so I still have a problem.

    Thanks paulderdash,
I am going to try writing to Zemana one more time about this. Your worrying comments and Zemana’s lack of comments means I will certainly not be trusting to luck. If necessary ZAM will have to go.

I would write to the support or wait some time until it is available maybe it is not yet ready.
("... update their systems by downloading and applying the latest BIOS, as soon as the relevant revision becomes available.")
