    Hi!

Perfect Disk seems to crawl when KAV realtime is enabled! Any clues?

Yes. Disable KAV Realtime before using Perfect Disk. Remember Perfect disk is accessing every file, and with KAV enabled it is checking every file as Perfect Disk accesses it. I also disable KAV if I am doing a snapshot update with FDISR, or scanning with any spyware program for the same reason. Of course with the spyware I suppose you could leave the realtime on and consider having done a scan with both.

Is there any good defrag program that works well with KAV enabled?

No, because the "problem" is caused by Kaspersky.

Most antivirus realtime scanners will interfere with disk defragmenters. NOD and F-Prot are two programs that don't. F-Prot does cause a lag when starting defragmentation but runs well after the initial slowdown.

YW and if I knew switching to Nod32 wouldn't be a problem, that would have been my first advice of course :).

    Hi Kalpik

I use Kav/Perfectdisk and with time the slowdowns are reduced, but just do as i do, rightclick on the Kav-icon in the tray and choose to suspend protection either manually on/off or for five minutes. ;) :)

Actually, so many ppl advocate KAV and looking at its detection rate, i decided to give it a try. But i am having problems with it. The first one is the Perfect Disk problem and also, sometimes, my computer just freezes at the login screen!

Perfectdisk is not what i consider a problem, have you remembered to disable the networkprotection (i assume you use a firewall), what securitylevel are you using it with at. etc etc.

Im using the windows firewall (SP2), so network protection was enabled. And whether the Perfect Disk thing is a problem or not, that is for me to decide! (Please dont take it otherwise!) I cannot schedule any defrag cause i have to manually disable KAV before running Perfect Disk. KAV killed the automation of Perfect Disk!

Anyway, thanks for trying to help me, but im back on good ol NOD32 :)
Will try KAV again if the defrag issue is resolved.

No, thats where you are wrong, my opinion is of course much more important, ask around, everyone knows this, now appologize accordingly young man!............................ ;) :D

P.s. About the Perfectdisk "issue", it probably will never be as light as Nod is this regard, from the thread linked to, Schouw (Senior research engineer):

"People have been complaining about KAV+defrag utils for years.
However KL still hasn't changed behaviour.

It hasn't changed because the securityviewpoint is more/most important.
We want to deliver maximum protection and there are good reasons to have KAV behave this way.

    (No, no details, sorry)"

But, the 2006 beta does seem to be faster when defragging.

Yeah i read that in the given link. Well, i gave KAV 2006 a try (Build 17X to build 195). Its still pre-beta i know so had a few glitches. (Not remembering exclusions, forgetting if a full scan has been done, and the web scanner is still not functioning well). Will definately give it another whirl as soon its open beta or a lil more usable ;)

    Cheers!

I can confirm that Perfectdisk is much faster with 2006 beta. Running it now on test comp and I experience very little slowdown.
