I am too much of a control freak to trust automatic updating mechanisms so I visit the McAfee updates site every morning. They have been doing daily updates there for a few weeks now...

Thanks Don. So I should hold off on purchasing KAV 5 until the new one is released? The reason I ask is because I'm pretty sure I will go with KAV 5. If I do purchase it now, will I be able to upgrade to the new one?

    Hi Don,

I am on a relatively new computer (about a 1.5 years old). Are users with new machines, in general, reporting about one minute to complete the start-up scan?

Thanks, as always, for your help and info.

Yes, you will be able to to upgrade, you buy a 1 year subscribtion and you can choose to use the version that you wish use whether that is 3/4/5 (there is only signature-updates for the older series 3/4, though) or 6 when this arrives sometime around august-october (the first real beta is coming in the first half of june). :)

    Hi Rich

I honestly don't know, it used to take 2 minutes on my newer pc (a 3200 AMD Athlon XP, which is really a 2200) and 2.5-3 minutes (on my AMD Duron 850). :)

    I say get KAV5 now!

Why wait? Just as KAV4me indicated in his reply to your original post, I've been using KAV5 Personal Beta2 and it has worked flawlessly. Info and download is available by going to...

    http://www.kaspersky.com/beta?product=160693785

...and just as you are pondering McAfee, I was pondering NOD32 because it's supposedly lighter on resources and has great 'heuristics', but after reading about it's problems in Wilders' NOD forum, I'm going to leave well enough alone! :p

I am reasonably sure if you go to ANY product forum, you will see users having problems of one sort or the other. That's why the forums exist.

Take a tour of other forums and see what you come up with.

No offense intended Ronjor (NOD32 has been a very reliable product). It just seems to me that v2.5 may have been released out of beta too soon!

I didn't have time to visit here until just now.

I purchased and installed KAV 5 Personal early this morning. I decided to do it this way and then download the upgrade when the beta goes final in a couple of weeks. I have KAV 5.0.227 running. I read somewhere a while back that it was a good idea to run a full scan with KAV as soon as possible. I ran two full scans of my hard drive. One on demand, one scheduled. I had to see how the scheduled scan works. :)

So far KAV is working great on my computer. I'm sure I made the right choice. Thanks to everyone who helped me with my decission. :)

Kav 6 is very impressive and has still yet to reach beta release stage.
