Maybe people will eventually learn to use offline devices for taking such photos. I mean, cameras can be tiny now, just part of a necklace or whatever. Use Bluetooth for data transfer. View on phones, sure, but don't keep copies there, or in the cloud.

I bet a lot of them didnt mean to put them in the cloud.
The iPhone initial setup wizard is aggresive and demanding and strongly implies to have GOT to complete it in order to use the device. Completing it of course includes setting up iCloud, it will then automatically upload anything and everything on that device to the cloud every time anything changes.

First of all, is this new leak legit or not? Because if we are to trust the hackers, it appears to be, though it’s worth knowing that the same site has previously posted a bunch of fake leaks as well, together with satirical content that has little to do with hacks.

Needless to say, the leak should be treated with a healthy dose of skepticism, especially because at first glance, its authenticity cannot be verified in any way.

"Massive revenge porn site Anon-IB shut down by Dutch police

One of the internet's most notorious revenge porn websites has been shut down after a year-long investigation by Dutch police Politie.
Police in the Netherlands announced Thursday that they seized Anon-IB's server and discovered that hundreds of women were targeted by hackers on the website...

But not only were people posting photos they obtained as revenge porn, users on AnonIB were actively hacking women and posting stolen images on the website, Dutch police said.

Hackers would break in to their victims' emails, social media accounts and cloud storage. On the forum, they would ask each other for help getting nude photos of specific people and share the stolen images with each other..."

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Facebook's Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis said the company was updating its pilot program targeting the non-consensual sharing of images on the platform. Rather than having to report an image after it's already been shared around Facebook (the company already has a system in place for reporting and removing those images), Facebook will let users upload an image before it's been seen by others.

The system is being trialled in the US, Canada, UK and Australia, following an earlier trial in Australia in late 2017.
Facebook is also partnering with safety organisations across the four regions to make it easier for users to "proactively report" images.

"It's demeaning and devastating when someone's intimate images are shared without their permission, and we want to do everything we can to help victims of this abuse," said Davis.

I guess that means facial recognition has been updated to also do ***** recognition.

It is about revenge porn? It is probably most useful to delete nude or porn, photos and videos with the face, because it is recognizable by other people. Posting other parts of the body without face and name isn't useful for predators. At least today.

A petition to change the law has been launched by the North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan.
She has asked for anonymity for victims, the same as in sexual offence cases.

Ms Mulligan told the BBC: "We think the law is fundamentally flawed. At the moment [revenge porn] is a communications offence not a sexual offence and that means victims face the likelihood of being publically named and we think that puts people off."

The Ministry of Justice has said it has no plans to extend automatic anonymity to revenge porn victims, but that it keeps the law under constant review.

The guidelines - published on Thursday - will come into force on 1 October.

The new guidelines stress that those who repeatedly post explicit material after it has already been taken offline are likely to receive the harshest sentences, after a consultation showed a trend of some offenders doing this.

Those who set up fake social media accounts to embarrass their targets will also face stronger punishments, as they show "significant planning" has gone into the offence, says the council.

Sentencing Council member Judge Rosa Dean said: "Our guidelines recognise and reflect the very intimate, personal and intrusive nature of these offences, which can have devastating, often long-term, impacts on victims and their families.

Facebook on Friday announced a new artificial intelligence-powered tool that it says will help the social network detect revenge porn — the nonconsensually shared intimate images that, when posted online, can have devastating consequences for those who appear in the photos.

The announcement follows on Facebook’s earlier pilot of a photo-matching technology, which had people directly submit their intimate photos and videos to Facebook.
The new AI technology for revenge porn, however, doesn’t require the victim’s involvement. This is important, Facebook explains, because victims are sometimes too afraid of retribution to report the content themselves. Other times, they’re simply unaware that the photos or videos are being shared.

While the company was short on details about how the new system itself works, it did note that it goes beyond simply “detecting nudity.”

As revenge porn is treated like a communications crime rather than a sexual crime, victims aren't guaranteed anonymity. They might be afraid to speak out knowing that the culprit might retaliate, and over a third of victims from the past year have decided against pursuing cases.

A 2017 University of Suffolk study showed that 95 percent of officers hadn't had any training on the subject.

One of the biggest porn companies is defending Iggy Azalea‘s right to choose when (and if) her nude photos ever appear online and they have even reached out to her to help with the issue.

A rep for xHamster tells The Blast that searches for Azalea have spiked on xHamster since the photos leaked from a 2016 GQ shoot. The photos have not appeared on the site but they say they “will vigilantly patrol user uploads to make sure that the photos do not appear on xHamster.”
The rep adds that they have “reached out to Iggy Azalea’s management team to find ways to collaborate on Iggy’s defense, including blocking her as a search term.”

Iggy has also vowed to take legal action against whoever leaked the photos.

On Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that classifies posting revenge porn — the distribution of photos or videos of another person without their consent — as a class A misdemeanor in the state of New York.

Those found guilty of sharing revenge porn in New York will now face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The law will officially take effect in 60 days. The New York Senate and Assemblyboth passed the legislation earlier this year, putting the state on track to join 42 other states, as well as New York City, in passing revenge porn criminalization laws.

The new law still defines spreading nonconsensual pornography as a form of harassment, meaning that the defendant has to act with “the intent to cause harm” to fall under the new law’s purview.

Celebrity nude photo leaks are a great example: The hacker who spread images of Jennifer Lawrence, Gabrielle Union, and other female celebrities in 2014 says he bore them no personal ill will. If the law instead considered nonconsensual pornography an invasion of sexual privacy, perpetrator motive becomes a nonissue in every single incident.

“We would have strongly preferred that [the bill] not include language that takes into account the offender’s intent,” adds Goldberg. “However, advocates were not willing to let another year go by without a law on the books.”

“What also concerns me is the false hope this gives victims who now think they have a path to justice,” Franks says. “New York gets to say it handled this problem, and legislators get to pat themselves on the back for doing a terrible job.”
