Because disks are a ridiculous form of media. USB's work way better. Removing the OOD means taking half an inch off of the case, reducing the weight, and leaving more room on the inside for air flow.

What if I want to play a DVD or an Echo & the Bunnymen CD? Plus, how come they still make most laptops with optical drives then? ;)

Sounds great. Personally I would prefer the Samsung anyway.

The same reason they still make desktops with floppy drives and have been for years. I'm not saying that laptops shouldn't have OOD's, that would be ridiculous, disks may be incredibly inefficient but they are ridiculously common.

But something like this is very clearly made for 100% portability and for streaming. The idea is to get away from physical storage and move towards streaming/ cloud storage.

If you need a netbook that also has the ability to play DVD's, of course, the Chrome notebook is not for you.

On another note: Native Client is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to see how it works with ChromeOS - I'd love to see a VM in a browser! haha that would be incredible.

I'm really tempted to get a Samsung for school or something. I love my CR48 too much to take it.

I haven't seen a desktop with a floppy drive for quite a while. Floppys were terrible anyway, I'm glad to see the back of them.

Yes, I gathered that. That's what netbooks were primarily designed for, although in my experience, netbooks are usually cheaper than laptops/notebooks as a whole.

It's just that I think for the Chromebook (technically a netbook rather than a notebook) to be successful, considering its diminished or limited capabilities, compared to a Windows netbook, it needs to be economically more enticing, so to speak.

The parts alone are somewhere around 350 dollars. And then you have assembly and 3G as well as other costs. In the end it's probably being sold for about 50 dollars premium.

    Mhm.

It adds up - people were expecting it to be 250 dollars, which is ridiculous because the parts ALONE cost more than that without any assembly even factored in.

I think 250 quid is a decent price! I'm not sure what that is in dollars though. ;)

Haha well I think 250 dollars is an awesome price! But they'd lose 100 bucks if not more every time they sold one =p

It wouldn't be the first time a company has initially sold things for a loss, banking on the fact that they will make a profit if the product takes off.

Well, over time it will naturally go down. But not for a while. Perhaps in September we'll see a new lineup to go with the new intel mobile ATOM.

As I rarely travel south of the Watford Gap I think I will have to wait until they are being sold further 'up t'North'. ;)

I'm not really in the market for a netbook at the moment but it seems to be an interesting & viable alternative to Windows. The fact that they appear to be shifting quite a few of them is a good sign I reckon. Although a lot of people I know personally, who I have discussed the Chromebook with, seem a bit ambivalent about its 'cloud' aspect.

I still bet that 349/399 quid price tag will drop eventually though.

It's interesting to see something like this. Linux has never been able to break into the user market - we're really only ever seen OSX and Windows. Watching a new operating system actually really make the effort to grab market share is fascinating.
