IT chiefs keep obsolete systems running just to keep data accessible

    Well, its not just the U.K. that is guilty of this but most countries worldwide including the U.S. The article does bring back "not so pleasant" memories of my IT work days.

    One from days past was a system I was responsible for that ran on an IBM 1401 emulator. IBM 1401 is relic 2nd generation hardware. The emulator simulated it on 4th generation hardware. Well somewhere along the way, they lost the source code for the system. When a change had to be made, the object code had to patched by taping and re-punching holes in the paper tape media it was stored on. Finally, there was only one person in the installation that knew how to do that. By the way, this was a critical system. Think that the turkeys in management would allocate funding to replace the system? Hell no.
