In a new opinion piece for the New York Times, Tim Wu, Columbia University law professor and outspoken promoter of the free and open internet, writes an interesting defense of President Trump’s ban on the Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat in the US.

Core to Wu’s argument is that China has banned TikTok and WeChat competitors like YouTube and WhatsApp for years. Foreign companies are effectively blocked from fully and independently competing in the Chinese market, while Chinese services like TikTok have been freely able to exploit Western markets. As Wu argues:

The asymmetry is unfair and ought no longer be tolerated. The privilege of full internet access — the open internet — should be extended only to companies from countries that respect that openness themselves.

Multiple companies have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok’s US business since President Trump issued an executive order earlier this month requiring the app’s Chinese owners to shutdown operations in America.

Should a sale not go through by the end of September (within 90 days of the order dated Aug. 14th), Trump said TikTok will have to “close down” in the US. Yet, general manager of TikTok’s business in the US Vanessa Pappas has told Bloomberg that the app will continue to operate in the country regardless of the potential ban.

“We believe we have multiple paths forward to ensure that we continue to provide this amazing app experience to the millions of Americans who come to rely on it every day," Pappas told Bloomberg.
Whether it’s through an acquisition by a major American company or dogged persistence on the part of TikTok’s US employees, it appears the app won’t be leaving the country anytime soon.

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, reportedly entertained making an investment in the U.S. operations of TikTok. According to Bloomberg, the investment would have been part of a group bid led by an unknown company.

Alphabet’s investment would have given the conglomerate a minority, non-voting stake through one of its investment arms.
Bloomberg points to CapitalG, a private equity arm, as being a possible investor. As of now, Alphabet’s interest has reportedly “fizzled in recent days,” although it could still participate in future bids. It’s unclear how many companies were part of the consortium trying for a larger bid.

TikTok is failing in its obligation to protect children who use its service and likely collects and distributes the personal data of minors to unknown third parties, some of them in China, in violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
That is according to Amsterdam-based Foundation for Market Information Research (Stichting Onderzoek Marktinformatie, or SOMI), a non-profit organisation that advocates for data privacy and consumer issues in the Netherlands and around Europe.

SOMI is urging concerned parents from anywhere in the world to contact it via its website and register for a small fee as it gathers information ahead of a possible collective legal claim against the China-owned social media platform.

“Europe has created the GDPR to give consumers control over their personal data and to protect minors in the digital world,” said Cor Wijtvliet, SOMI co-founder. “TikTok consistently violates similar standards in countries outside the EU on several counts.”

The report says it is unclear in which court Tiktok plans to file the lawsuit, but that the company is exploring legal options. TikTok employees are also reportedly preparing their own lawsuit.

As expected, TikTok has filed a lawsuit against the US government to challenge a proposed ban against the service. Specifically, TikTok says the executive order signed by President Trump on August 6th is “without any evidence to justify such an extreme action, and without any due process.”
The company says it disagrees with the characterization of TikTok as a national security threat and that the Trump administration ignored all of TikTok’s efforts to address those concerns.

Unsurprisingly, TikTok said it would have preferred to continue conversations rather than turn to litigation, but the company feels its hands are tied at this point.
Finally, TikTok also has built “software barriers” that the company says keeps TikTok user data separate from other products from ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company.

Kevin Mayer has stepped down as CEO of TikTok, just months after taking the job and after recent pressure by President Trump over the app’s security, Variety has confirmed.
Mayer sent a letter to TikTok and ByteDance employees on Wednesday night, announcing his decision.

“In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for. Against this backdrop, and as we expect to reach a resolution very soon, it is with a heavy heart that I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to leave the company,” Mayer said in the letter.
Mayer’s exit comes just weeks after President Trump signed an executive order to ban TikTok unless its parent company ByteDance sold its U.S. assets to an American company within 90 days.

In July, amid increasing scrutiny from the Trump administration, TikTok announced a novel effort to build trust with regulators: a physical office known as the Transparency and Accountability Center.

“We believe all companies should disclose their algorithms, moderation policies, and data flows to regulators,” then-TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer said at the time. “We will not wait for regulation to come.”
With so much turmoil, you might expect the company to set aside its efforts to show visitors its algorithms, at least temporarily. But the TikTok Transparency and Accountability Center is now open for (virtual) business — and on Wednesday I was part of a small group of reporters who got to take a tour over Zoom.

All of it is basically in keeping with how American social platforms manage these concerns, though it’s worth noting that 2-year-old TikTok built this infrastructure much faster than its predecessors did.
