Apple may have only just pulled back the covers on the iPhone 12, but that never stops us from looking forward to what our favourite tech company has in store when it updates the iPhone again in 2021. Here's everything we know so far about the iPhone 13.
When will the iPhone 13 be released?
Up until this year, Apple has been quite consistent with the release dates of its iPhones. Usually, the new products are announced at the beginning of September and released a week or so later.

But assuming that things return to a semblance of normality in 2021, the iPhone 13 should return to its traditional place in the calendar, with a September release.

Forward-looking: Although Kuo didn’t mention it specifically, the next iPhones will almost certainly be powered by a new version of Apple’s SoC, tentatively known as the A15 Bionic. Others have also said to expect an even smaller front notch and perhaps 120Hz displays, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a recent research note that he expects next year’s iPhone 13 to ship in the same four model sizes as the current-gen handset, albeit with some major camera improvements.
In the research note, seen by MacRumors, Kuo said the ultra-wide cameras on the two high-end phones will get six-element, f/1.8 aperture lenses with autofocus. In comparison, all iPhone 12 models have an f/2.4, five-element ultra-wide lens with a fixed focus.

Editor's take: Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the company’s next iPhone, tentatively known as the iPhone 13, could be the first to use a new type of battery technology called soft board batteries. This, combined with potential gains from a new type of display, could result in much better battery life. There’s even talk that Apple could experiment with some sort of always-on display, although admittedly, that seems a bit far-fetched.

In a recent investment note seen by 9to5Mac, Kuo said he predicts that battery supplier Jialianyi will get about 40 percent to 50 percent of Apple’s soft board battery orders for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. This, he anticipates, could increase the revenue the company generates from Apple by about 100 percent year over year.
Kuo said the new battery tech would allow Apple to save space inside the iPhone and reduce costs.

In a new investor note obtained today by 9to5Mac, Kuo states that the mass production schedule of the iPhone 13 will be the same as for previous iPhone models before the 12 lineup. That means we can expect all iPhone 13 models available by September 2021 without delays.

Kuo also says he has no concerns about the lower shipping forecast for the A14 chip produced by TSMC on Q2 2021 compared to Q1 2021. The analyst says this decline is “seasonal” and expected as TSMC will begin shifting its production pipeline for developing the new A15 chip that will equip the iPhone 13 lineup.

iPhone 13 Pro models coming next year could feature low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels, that would allow for higher refresh rates of up to 120Hz and also features such as an always-on display.

Rumour has it that Samsung and LG would continue to be the primary supplier of OLED panels for Apple. However, two of its four models (presumably the Pro variants) would use a new LTPO OLED display, similar to what it introduced with the Apple Watch Series 4. With a variable refresh rate of such a panel, it's possible that Apple could finally introduce 90Hz or even 120Hz refresh rates in its iPhone models.

According to a report by Korean website TheElec, iPhone 13's OLED panels would be more technologically sophisticated compared to the ones used in the iPhone 12 (Review) series.
With LTPO, Apple would be able to drop the refresh rate really low along with the brightness, that could allow for an always-on display mode that users can opt to use.

The latest from Barclays analysts Thomas O’Malley, Blayne Curtis, Tim Long, and their associates was first detailed today by MacRumors. Their report indicates that Apple is going to adopt a “game-changing” upgrade for Wi-Fi, adding support for Wi-Fi 6E in the iPhone 13 lineup. The analysts were able to come to these conclusions based on conversations they had with multiple Apple suppliers.

A WiFi 6E-enabled device would support the newer 6GHz band, along with 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

While the standard for WiFi 6 is yet to be published, the 6GHz band will bring-in faster data speeds (up to 9.6Gbps) and wider channels for faster connectivity.

Apple is expected to expand its LiDAR Scanner to the entire iPhone 13 lineup in 2021, rather than only the Pro and Pro Max models, according to supply chain sources cited by Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes.

First introduced on the iPad Pro in March 2020, and since expanded to the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, the LiDAR Scanner is a small sensor that uses 3D sensing to measure the distance to surrounding objects up to five meters away.
Apple frequently introduces new features or specs on higher-end devices before trickling them down to lower-end devices in later years.

In case you weren’t aware, not all 5G is equal. This is because depending on the antennas in your smartphone, you might be connected to either mmWave 5G or sub-6GHz 5G. The former offers faster speeds compared to sub-6GHz, but have a shorter range, while the latter offers wider coverage but at the cost of speed.

The iPhone 12 currently supports both 5G connectivity options if you live in the US, but for non-US markets, it’s sold with the sub-6GHz antenna.

This is according to a report from Patently Apple who cites a supply chain report in which a Taiwanese company, Qiqi, is in the process of receiving a large order for mmWave antennas which will apparently be going into the iPhone 13.

Ahead of the potential launch of the "iPhone 13" later in 2021, Wedbush believes there is still "massive" pent-up demand for new smartphones within Apple's customer base.

In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider, Wedbush lead analyst Daniel Ives acknowledges that Apple shares have underperformed thus far in 2021. Ives attributes that to Wall Street being unconvinced about continued iPhone growth.
However, the analyst believes that current demand could point toward another strong cycle for Apple's upcoming 2021 iPhone models.

As far "iPhone 13" specifications, the analyst predicts that the lineup will add a 1TB storage option and will include a number of LiDAR-related enhancements across the lineup.

Because about 250 million out of the current 975 million iPhone models have not yet been upgraded in the past three and a half years, Ives says that Apples current "robust consumer product cycle" will continue well into 2022.

We’re only three or four months away from the announcement of the next generation iPhone, but rumors already give us an idea of what to expect from Apple’s new smartphones in 2021. Based on everything leaked so far, ConceptCreator together with LetsGoDigital have created beautiful 3D renders of what the iPhone 13 Pro will look like.

Some schematics that leaked earlier this year indicate that this year’s iPhones will be more like an “iPhone 12S” rather than an iPhone 13, although the official names remain unknown. That’s because the design will remain pretty much the same as the current generation, with only a few noticeable changes.
For instance, these schematics suggest that the new iPhones will be thicker and have larger camera lenses — at least in the Pro lineup.

We can see a new version of the iPhone Pro that is very similar to the iPhone 12 Pro, but with a smaller notch, bigger cameras, and new colors (although there are no concrete leaks about new colors in the iPhone 13 lineup).
It’s possible that Apple is more focused on improving the iPhone hardware with things like better cameras, bigger batteries, and expanded 5G support.

In a note shared today with investors, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts strong iPhone 13 shipments due to the Huawei ban and tempting feature upgrades. Kuo believes in stronger iPhone sales not only for 2021 as well as 2022.

We have a favorable view of Apple’s future iPhone product strategy and expect that iPhone shipments will reach 230–240mn and 250–260mn units in 2021 and 2022, respectively (vs. about 195mn in 2020).
For the second half of 2021, Kuo predicts that the iPhone will gain in the high-end market share due to “specifications upgrade” and the “US ban on Huawei.” Apple is expected to announce four new iPhone models this year with a smaller notch, upgraded camera, 120HZ refresh rate, and a new A15 processor.

Kuo estimates that the new 2H21 iPhone shipments will reach up to 88 million units vs. 75 millions units in 2H20.

Also today, new iPhone 13 dummies were shown. According to the image, the new line will include four different iPhones, as it happened last year, the cameras on the regular models will have a slight new design while the Pro models will exclusively maintain the LiDAR Scanner. As posted by leaker Sonny Dickson, the iPhone 13 Pro Max dummy is slightly larger than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple’s flagship 2021 iPhones will come in the same sizes as last year’s models, but with a smaller display notch, according to a new report from Bloomberg. This mirrors previous predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to Bloomberg, this year’s phones will be an iterative upgrade over the iPhone 12 series, and will include incremental improvements to their processors, cameras, and displays when they’re announced in September.

Bloomberg reports that “at least one” of the four new devices will include an LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) display. It’s a technology Apple has previously used with its smartwatches to dynamically adjust their screen refresh rates to conserve battery. That lines up with a previous prediction from Ming-Chi Kuo, who said that both Pro iPhones coming this year would include LTPO displays and 120Hz refresh rates.
The report also casts doubt on the possibility of seeing an iPhone with an in-display fingerprint sensor this year. Although Bloomberg says Apple has tested the technology, it says it’s unlikely to appear in 2021

When it comes to built-in storage of phones, the most common we’ve seen is 512GB. Sure, there are some phones here and there that offer 1TB, but it’s pretty rare. However, Apple could potentially be joining that exclusive club this year with the iPhone 13, or so Wedbush analysts believe.

This is actually not the first time we’re hearing about the possibility of a 1TB iPhone 13. It was late last year that leakster Jon Prosser hinted at the configuration, although there are some who believe that a 1TB iPhone might only come in 2022, but either way we’ll have to wait for the official announcement for more details.

Apple AirPods and Apple Watch supplier Luxshare has won its first orders to manufacture the forthcoming "iPhone 13," alongside regular assembler Foxconn.

Backing up previous claims that Luxshare take on iPhone assembly, a new report says that it will specifically produce the "iPhone 13 Pro." While Apple is continuing with its regular suppliers, such as Foxconn, it has reportedly tapped Luxshare to make up to 3% of the total orders for the model.
According to Nikkei Asia, Luxshare Precision Industry has won the order away from both Foxconn and Pegatron. It is expected to begin manufacturing this month.

Following initial testing of iOS 15 that found many third-party apps could not exceed the standard 60Hz refresh rate of the iPhone 13 Pro’s ProMotion screen, Apple has now clarified the situation. The good news is that developers will be able to take full advantage of the 120Hz display soon.

For battery life reasons, apps will need to opt-in to 120Hz support if they are doing particular custom rendering, like games. The complete steps that developers need to follow will be officially documented soon.

iFixit shares full iPhone 13 teardown with details on Face ID changes

After live streaming the teardown process on Friday, the folks at iFixit have now shared additional details from their in-depth teardown of the iPhone 13 Pro. In total, iFixit gives the iPhone 13 Pro a repairability score of 5/10, which is down from the 6/10 it awarded the iPhone 12 Pro last year.

One of the notable internal changes this year is a new Face ID array that combines the flood illuminator and dot protector into a single module. This, along with moving the earpiece speaker to the top bezel, is what allowed Apple to reduce the size of the notch in the iPhone 13.

iFixit also confirms that any display replacement will break Face ID from working, which we first reported over the weekend.

Face ID works even when we disconnected the front sensor assembly. However, any display replacement knocks out Face ID.We tried transferring the sensors from the old display and porting over the Face ID hardware, but no dice. It looks like the display is serial-locked to the phone.

Last week, 9to5Mac reported that Face ID stops working if you replace the iPhone 13 screen with a third-party repair. Now, a new video shows that it’s possible to replace the screen and make facial recognition work, but it’s not simple.

When we covered the original Phone Repair Guru video, he said that even when you replace your iPhone 13 screen for another original display, a message saying “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display” appeared.
With that in mind, iCorrect, a UK third-party repair shop, proved that it’s possible to replace the iPhone 13 screen without losing Face ID, but, indeed, it’s a very sophisticated process.

When the iPhone 13 lineup was first released in September, teardowns quickly revealed a major change to the repair process. For the first time, if you place the iPhone 13’s display through a third-party repair, Face ID will stop working. Now, iFixit has published a closer look at this change, calling it a “dark day for fixers, both DIY and professional.”

iFixit says that this change now means you’ll need a microscope to complete “one of the most common phone repairs” that could once be done “with hand tools.” Third-party independent repair shops could be forced to shut down, with the change meaning they’ll be “forced to choose between spending thousands on new equipment or losing a major source of income.”

A workaround for the repair has been discovered, iFixit explains, but it’s described as “sophisticated.” Repair shops would have to physically move “a soldered chip from the original screen onto the replacement.” Otherwise, you’ll be presented with an error message saying that your iPhone is “unable to activate Face ID.

As iFixit detailed in-depth last week, this change to the iPhone 13 repair process meant that repair shops would need to move over a tiny control chip from the original screen to the new screen in order to retain Face ID support.
