The “standard” 6.1-inch iPhone 12 includes an OLED screen with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,200 nits of brightness, and 460 PPI pixel density, covered by a new Corning-developed Ceramic Shield screen glass that promises enhanced toughness against damage — more than any smartphone glass, with four times the prior resilience to drops.

A smaller iPhone 12 mini has all the same features as the iPhone 12, but with the aforementioned 5.4-inch screen and a physically smaller form factor — a design that Apple claims is the smallest, thinnest 5G smartphone in the world.

Apple also announced the $999 iPhone 12 Pro and $1,099 iPhone 12 Pro Max, bringing larger displays into form factors similar to the iPhone 11 Pro.

All of the models continue to use Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector for wired charging, but also support universal Qi wireless charging, plus a revived Apple power solution called MagSafe — magnetic inductive charging at 15 watt speeds, twice the peak of prior iPhones’ Qi support.

The first iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro pre-orders have started shipping out to early buyers. As usual, this doesn’t mean you should expect your iPhone 12 order to arrive any earlier than the October 23 release date.

If you check your order status via Apple’s website, you’ll likely see that your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro is still “preparing to ship.” However, if you head to the UPS website, you can track the progress of your order with a few simple steps.
As usual, Apple does not update the shipment status of new iPhone orders through its website until later in the week when we’re closer to the official release date.

On the other hand, as we detailed yesterday, the first iPhone 12 accessories have started arriving to customers. This includes MagSafe cases as well as the MagSafe Charger itself. You can get a closer look at the new accessories in our full coverage right here.

TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates Apple notched between 7 million and 9 million combined iPhone 12 and 12 Pro pre-orders over launch weekend, and those numbers will only rise with a start to iPhone 12 Pro Max and mini sales in November.

In a note to investors on Monday, Kuo said iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro alone nearly matched the performance of the entire iPhone 11 line in 2019. Apple is estimated to have sold between 10 million and 12 million iPhone 11 series devices during launch weekend in 2019. Sales of the two new models reached an estimated 1.7 million to 2 million units in 24 hours, up from 500,000 to 800,000 iPhone 11 units recorded last year.

"The iPhone 12 Pro pre-order beat our expectation because of Apple core fans' initial preference for high-end models, the strong demand in the Chinese market, and the coming peak season demand in the U.S. and Europe," Kuo writes.

As The Verge notes, the iPhone 12 Pro's screen repair cost has not increased despite Apple's new ceramic-hardened display it developed with Corning, which Apple claims has improved drop performance damage by four times compared with last year's models.
The higher cost of repairing the entry-level iPhone 12 is likely to be because Apple has used more expensive OLED displays across the board for the iPhone 12 series, whereas the iPhone 11 featured an LCD screen.

Unfortunately, it was not to be and if you look at the state of 5G, it’s not a big deal at all that all iPhone 12 models are using the Snapdragon X55 instead.

At this current time, the latest word doing the rounds is that Samsung is tasked with fulfilling Snapdragon X60 orders so we’ll likely see the modem in action starting 2021. You might also be wondering why none of the iPhone 12 models feature Apple’s in-house modem right? Well, there is a reason for that. According to a previous report, the earliest that we might get to see this silicon is in 2025, so for the time being, the Cupertino tech giant will have to rely on Qualcomm’s baseband chips.

After streaming the teardown live on YouTube on Friday, the folks over at iFixit have now shared the full details of what’s inside the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

Interestingly, the teardown reveals that the displays work interchangeably between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, even though the iPhone 12 Pro features a higher maximum brightness.

Our early tests indicate both displays work interchangeably when swapped between the standard 12 and 12 Pro—even though the max brightness specs are ever-so-slightly different, as careful observers have pointed out. There’s a little more to the story here; we’ll see if we’re able to unearth more details later.
Another interesting tidbit is that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are so similar that where the iPhone 12 Pro houses its LiDAR sensor and telephoto lens, the iPhone 12 has a “plastic spacer” to keep the overall form factor identical.

All in all, iFixit gives the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro a repairability score of 6 out of 10, which is the same as the iPhone 11 series, citing two key positives:

Display and battery replacements remain a priority in the new iPhones’ design.

While it may look and feel exactly like glass, the ceramic shield covering the screens is, as the name suggests, a combination of glass and ceramic (which is harder than most metals). It's a totally new cover material for the iPhone and it's unlike anything we've ever tested before.

To find out how this new material holds up to the elements, we put two brand new iPhone 12s through a few scratch and drop tests. And as it turns out, this new glass is incredibly durable.

Let's break it down
Because our tests aren't scientific, we can't say for a fact that the screen is stronger than any other phone in the market, but we can definitely say that our iPhone 12 was incredibly tough to crack (and scratch) even on tile and sidewalk.
The back of the iPhone 12 however, doesn't seem to have the same drop resistance superpower as the screen.

In a statement to CNET, Apple said "iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro represent the biggest jump in durability ever on iPhone ... iPhone 12 models have gone through rigorous real-world testing and are designed to be durable, but not indestructible. If anyone is concerned about dropping their iPhone and damaging it, we suggest using one of the many beautiful cases available to protect iPhone."

Caveat emptor: Apple recently added a new document to its support pages regarding the use of the iPhone 12's MagSafe charger. It's pretty mundane and common sense, but Apple has added a few warnings at the end of the document that could be troubling for some users who want to use the feature.

Apple warns that the MagSafe can generate excess heat. As a failsafe, iOS will limit charging to 80 percent if the phone gets too warm (this works for any charger). It says that this will "extend the lifespan of your battery," but comes at the cost of longer charge times. Apple says you can avoid this by moving your phone to a cooler location if it gets too warm.
The support document also cautions that the MagSafe charger can damage the magnetic strip or RFID chip in your credit cards if they get caught between the iPhone and the charger.

"If you have a case that holds any of these sensitive items, remove them before charging or make sure that they aren't between the back of your device and the charger," Apple advises customers.

Additionally, users should note that the charger may leave a circular ring on cases if they are left on while charging. Apple only cautions users with leather cases, but MacRumors reports that one of its readers posted pictures to the forum showing what the MagSafe did to his plastic case (above).

The documents first spotted by VentureBeat’s Jeremy Horwitz say the phone “supports a built-in inductive charging transmitter and receiver.” Apple has not officially announced any such functionality that could be used to charge future AirPods or Apple’s long rumored Tile-competitor dubbed “AirTags.”

“In addition to being able to be charged by a desktop WPT [wireless power transfer] charger (puck), 2020 iPhone models … also support WPT charging function at 360 kHz to charge accessories,” one of the documents reads.

German repair company Kaputt, for example, has released its initial teardowns of both models on YouTube, revealing few major differences but a couple of interesting tidbits about the internal design and components of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
As the teardown reveals, the iPhone 12 Pro Max retains an L-shaped battery design. That's something Apple changed on its other iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models, including the iPhone 12 mini.

It says Apple’s total planned iPhone production for the first half of next year is up almost 30% year-on-year, while initial full-year production targets are up by 20% to hit 230M phones …
Nikkei cites supply-chain sources.

[...] The tentative full-year forecast that Apple shared with its suppliers suggests it plans to build up to 230 million iPhones in 2021, including both old and new models, the people said. This would mark a 20% rise from 2019, though the target will be regularly reviewed and revised in response to any changes in consumer demand, they added.

The iPhone 12 also entered the top 10 bestseller list of 5G devices for January-October 2020, attaining the seventh position. “This is a big achievement, considering the new iPhone series was available for only two weeks in October,” notes the source.
Compared to most of the other 5G models, the iPhone 12 has a wider market coverage with availability in over 140 countries.
