Cruise, I was sure that it would work, but noticed that there is a problem with OLEDLG.DLL. Indeed that file should be present, and maybe I'm missing something else too (because Marc couldn't get it to work too). I'll try to find time and figure it out. Sorry about it.

    puff-m-d,

Yes, I meant just copying, but looks like I missed some things like OLEDLG.dll etc. I'll see how this could be properly done.

It's going on an FTP site as I write this. I'll send you the link when it's done and I hope it'll help.

    Hello Isso,
I've got AX64 on my windows 7 and xp box. When I mount the backup on windows 7, I get the message that the backup was successful, but it was not. I don't see a virtual drive. On windows xp I get an message message when mounting the backup, "Failed to mount the backup error 0 code 0". Also I currently am not able to copy a file from the AX64 browser on windows 7 and paste the file to my desktop. o_O

    Isso,

I'm a licensed user of Active@ Boot Disk. The Active@ media builder allowed me to add my Intel RST drivers and by doing that I'm able to boot my laptop with the Active@ USB Boot Drive I created. The builder also allows adding any specified files/folders to the Boot Disk, so I added the 3-files you suggested and after doing that I booted my laptop and tried running AXTMImageBrowser.exe, also resulting in the OLEDLG.DLL problem (as reported by MarcP)! I sure hope you can get this sorted out. :doubt:

And I would agree with this as well.

Also, I would like to nominate Isso for software developer of the century.

    Who will second the motion?

    Kudos Isso,

The latest beta version now works on all my computers, even the one which previously had Acronis True Image Home 2011 and Acronis Disk Disk Director Home 11.

    Kudos to you once more.

When will we see the real mckoy, the real AXTM, without the beta?

    We are ready!

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

Hi, I've followed all the posts here and have been running AX64 starting from version 886. I'm a licensed user of Rollback Rx ver 9 but have kept it off my machine (Thinkpad x61) since I migrated to a SSD about two months ago.

Just wanted to post my experience here. Three days ago, my machine crashed after leaving it on overnight. I woke up in the morning to a Windows screen that looks like the user logon screen after one has logged off and needs to logon again, except there was no user icon to log on. My machine was just frozen at this point and was unresponsive to any input. I had to hard reboot and after that Windows would not load, stalling at the startup screen with the scrolling bar. Tried rebooting a few times but Windows would not load. How I wished then I had AX64 recovery media to turn to at this point, but unfortunately I didn't have any. I had migrated my Windows Vista to SSD using Paragon's Migrate OS to SSD and somehow my Thinkpad Recovery Partition was not migrated to the SSD.

May I please reconfirm that Vista users without a recovery partition will not be able to create AX64 recovery media? I remember reading something to that effect somewhere in this forum but after so many posts, it would take some time to locate the exact posts. How about if I put my old hard disk back into my Thinkpad x61 with its original hidden recovery partition, install AX64, then create AX64 recovery media? Would this work? I also recently bought a Thinkpad x230 which runs Windows 7 64 bit. Can I create a AX64 recovery CD using this new machine and use it on my Vista laptop? I am not that computer-savvy so any advice is appreciated..

By the way, I recovered my Vista machine by using Image For Windows to restore to an image I had made on an external usb hdd, but this took my system back to 26 March 2013. Fortunately I had my important files in a dropbox folder that syncs to dropbox service on the web, and could recover them in their most current incarnations. However I still lost quite a fair bit of stuff and realized now the virtues of having a AX64 recovery media..

    sevenstar,

Could you please send to me (info@ax64.com) the logs from both machines. You can collect the logs by clicking on the top left corner of the program, then select About..., then Collect Logs. Thank you!

    Hi Mohamed,

I'm pleasantly surprised! I'm wondering what the problem was. The production release will be out sometime next week, if we don't find any major problems during testing.

    Hi kimotheraphy,

We fixed the problem with Recovery media creation on Vista, I just can't update my original post to reflect the changes. It will just ask you to insert the Vista installation CD. For other Windows versions there is no such requirement.
Yes, you can create the recovery environment on your Windows 7 machine - I'm pretty sure it will work fine on your Vista machine.

Right here.....the wait for such an Xtremely useful project of this scale is been agonizingly slow as dial-up.

This new development is an awesome! and exciting! relief.

Thanks Isso for taking up the cause. Really effective coding going forward in this one to be sure.

    Hi Isso.

FYI, i believe that kimotheraphy's issue of not being able to create a boot disk stems from the fact that at one time he had RB installed. You may recall that RB does not always rename the "Winre.dat" file back to "Winre.wim" (located in the hidden "c:\recovery\{GUID}" folder) after it is uninstalled resulting in issues in creating a recovery disk in both Vista and W7. In fact i tested this out and renamed the "Winre.wim" file to "Winre.dat" (as RB would have it) and indeed on my W7x64 system i was prompted by AX64 to insert my W7 DVD. I dont have Vista but I'm certain that the same will apply.

ISSO, I don't know if you saw the above post. Terrywood and I had the same experience while making the recovery CD. I haven't tested the cd yet until I know it's OK. My answer to him is above. Should we be concerned or has it been dealt with? Thanks in advance.:)

I am trying out your lastest just downloaded.

I get the following error message when backing up:

    Backup error C1000000A code 1

Do you have any suggestions on how to fix?

    Many thanks,

This issue still persists in the latest build 1.0.967. This is the scenario:

Simple Win7 32bit installation, just one system partition C: (of course there is a hidden 100 MB partition in front of the system partition).

No UEFI, no secure boot, no GPT drives

Installed latest AX64 build, made a backup to an external HDD. (also made an Acronis backup as a safety layer)

Wiped the HDD by overwriting the MBR and the partition table with zeros. All partition managers I tried report the whole HDD as "Unassigned". (This is a real world scenario. After a fatal malware infection the drive should be cleaned totally)

Booted with the AX64 recovery media (USb stick), selected "Recovery". The wiped HDD appears as a target, I selelected it. Recovery went on without any errors.

The computer did not boot, the HDD was not recognized.

Booted the computer with a partition manager. The hidden 100 MB partition was not there, it was labeled as "Unassigned".

Booted with the Acronis recovery disk and recovered only this hidden partition.

Booted again with the AX64 recovery stick and did a recovery again.

    Everything worked.

    My conclusion:
The hidden 100 MB partition which the Win7 installer creates is not backed up correctly by AX64. Which means that it cannot be recovered after a fatal crash. And without this partition Win7 will not start.

    Solution?
Wait until AX64 supports multiple partitions (including hidden partitions)

Right now I still need to have a backup created by an image based software like Acronis in addition to AX64 to be able to recover my machine after a fatal HDD failure.

    Cheers

    Additional Information.

Win8 64 bit, no UEFI, no secure boot, no GPT drives, no hidden partition, system drive is on 2 SSD's in Raid 0.
RollbackRx and ShadowProtect both installed on system drive.

Are you able to backup the drive(s) using Windows' built-in backup program (Windows Backup)? If not, then you should try deleting the shadow volume copies that are listed in Device Manager when "show hidden devices" is enabled.

So far AX64 beta has been working well on my machine with a Windows 7 64-bit OS installed on a 512 Gb SSD (C-drive) and a 512 Gb HD serving as "data drive" (D-drive). I am backing up drive C: to drive D:.

Perhaps AX64 is the answer to the issues the other snapshot programs are confronted with on SSDs, such as TRIM support and garbage collection.
