Thank you again Baldrick. I seem to be in several good hands.
I could have done with them earlier when I could not create startup CD in Windows 8.1, but eventually found post #6138 and all was well.

I think your answer gives me confidence enough to try two partitions and as you say, in the same depository.

[EDIT] Thank you aladdin, we crossed. Neither. I wanted to back up the OS (C) and also a data partition on the same HDD.

    Hi Acadia,

I was not fortunate enough to test and use such a gem of a program. I came to imaging scenario very late. FDISR seems to be beyond comparison.

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    Hi Mohamed.

Where should I get the two files from?

    Hi Stigg,

If you have access to a machine which has lower than Windows 8.1, you can simply copy them from the following directory to your Flash Drive.

The file etfsboot.com is in the following directory:

    C:\Windows\Boot\DVD\PCAT

and the other file efisys.bin will be in the following directory

    C:\Windows\Boot\DVD\EFI

It will be a simple copying to your Flash Drive. You can than paste both these files in both the directories. To paste them you need to "Take Ownership" of the directories. I have already uploaded for you the registry file for "Take Ownership".

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

I made the recovery media, both CD and USB.
Interesting to note that efisys.bin is nowhere to be found on them.

Now, you can use EasyBCD to have AX64 as boot menu like Macrium Reflect System Recovery.

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    P.S. See attached image.

I don't know if this should be a seperate thread.

    Windows 8.1:
I installed Realcopy v859W not knowing whether AX64 or Realcopy beta is the most current program to use. At the reboot stage I received a message before Windows started (not previously seen) saying Kernel_auto_boost_invalid_lock Release'.
Not sure whether this was due to AX64 or Realcopy.
Windows continued to startup OK without intervention. I removed Realcopy, rebooted and the same occurred.

    Any pointers please?

    Windows 8.1: Trial version 1120:
Well I have come to the conclusion that this software does not work.
I have even removed and re-installed. Same results.
I make backups OK but when I try to restore, all I get is a very fast DOS window (too fast to read) and AX64 is no longer running, nor is any restore taking place.
I have tried this several times.
A good thing I did not wait until I had a disaster.

    1. You are trying to install two products that conflict with each other. AX64 and RealCopy made by the same people.

    2. On Windows 8.1, the only the latest AX64 v1.3.7 works and nothing else. This has been posted umpteen times, even few posts back.

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    Re: I Appreciate Your Post

    Hi Mohamed

How to download the file. In all my attempts I get only a notepad, and cannot either "copy and past" the file from the thread in a folder in order to change the extension.

    Thanks

    @aladdin:
I did not have both programs at the same time.
The version of AX64 that I installed I downloaded from the AX64 site yesterday 1.2.0.1120
http://www.ax64.com/ and it gives the version number beneath the download button.
How am I supposed to know there is another version somewhere else, I should not first have to come to Wilders and read every post to see whether the obvious download site does not have the correct version or that there is another site?

[EDIT] Found the obscure link in an obscure post that any non-enthusiastic follower of the forum would never find. Why not place it with the download, unless part of the test is to be required to be psychic.

Enonod... the version that works with W8.1 IS NOT a formal release... it's a BETA release. That's why it's not documented on AX64's web site. Most of the members of this forum are amongst the BETA test group of users.

So.........This is what I found out!...........I had no actual need to restore anything until yesterday, and when I clicked on the particular snapshot I wanted to restore to, I was given a message that My PC would restart when the restore was complete!......That was 3 hours ago! and it hasn't restarted yet! In fact nothings happened at all! So my conclusion is This **** doesn't work on Windows 8.1

n.b Very Shoddy behaviour in my view of The Developers lack of Informing customers on their website that Windows 8.1 is not yet supported, at the very least I would have expected the usual incompatibility issue popup on the screen, but Nothing!... far from Impressed at the Moment $39.95 for a spanner in the works does not make me Happy!

Still. They should mention it like they do on their Facebook page. That's not kept within the BETA group.

    Hi Samy,

Glad you did it. Wilders' doesn't allow to upload .reg instead I changed it to .txt.

Just saw your excellent and very educating PM. It will take me couple of days to properly digest it and then I will reply you.

    Best regards my friend,

    Mohamed

    Hi Enocod,

The above link for AX64 download you posted, says it only works with the following Windows:

Now where did you get the idea it works with Windows 8.1? And then complain about it?

You have been active in this thread for few days, and on 20 December, a day before your post complaining on page 249 that AX64 v1.2.1120 is not compatible with Windows 8.1, I have posted one page before on page 248 in my post # 6179, the latest version compatible Windows 8.1. See the following post:

    Dearest Enonod,

AX64 for its simplicity only backups up the OS (C). You can use some other file backup program like SyncBack Free to backup your data partition.

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

Just did a routine backup (I don't use hourly snapshots, only full backups when needed) and this time the backup takes a much longer time than before.
The backups go to a networked drive (by default). I had a taken a separate backup to an external drive recently (for offsite), but today with the external drive removed the destination drive showed up correctly. What baffles me is that it says "this is the first backup and will take some time..." but the directory already shows at least 8 prior backups. Does switching the destination folder cause this break in the chain (even though the destination is now back the same)? Looking at the previous files in the destination folder, I do see that some are much smaller, so can only be incrementals.

    @laddin:
The above link for AX64 download you posted, says it only works with the following Windows:

    Quote:
    Version 1.2.1120 (30 Day Free Trial). Supports Windows XP, Vista, 7 & 8. (32 and 64 bit)
Now where did you get the idea it works with Windows 8.1? And then complain about it?

Neither does it say it works with XP sp3 or 2 or 1. It would seem to be quite normal practice not to refer to such increments in compatibility even though some was not compatible with sp3.

An average passer by on any software website would accept Windows 8 compatibility to mean that it has not stopped at Windows 7.
I have not looked too hard but have visited many and never yet seen 'compatible with Windows 8.1' in the main offering.
I think you are mincing words and being pedantic.
Perhaps it should say 'but not Windows 8.1 yet', because not everybody (average person) is going to visit Wilders. When they do it is possibly only to try to solve a single issue, not read the whole 250+ [Edit sorry 248+] pages in case there is something else.
    Over and out.
